Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week -14-08-2022

Background on the Gospel Reading Luke 1:39-56 The Almighty has done great things for me

Today’s feast celebrates Mary’s Assumption into heaven. It is one of three feasts of Mary that are Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics in the United States. January 1 is the feast of Mary, the Mother of God, and December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven.

The Gospel for this holy day recalls Mary’s actions after the announcement of Jesus’ birth by the Angel Gabriel. Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is also with child. Elizabeth greets Mary with full recognition of the roles they and their unborn children will play in God’s plan for salvation. Mary responds to Elizabeth’s greeting with her song of praise, the Magnificat. Both women recall and echo God’s history of showing favor upon the people of Israel. Mary’s Magnificat, in particular, echoes the song of praise offered by Hannah, the mother of Samuel.

The Gospel for this day reminds us that Mary’s Assumption into heaven is best understood with regard for the full spectrum of Catholic beliefs about the person of Christ and the person of Mary. Only Mary, who was born without stain of original sin—the Immaculate Conception—could give birth to Christ, who is fully God and fully human. This is called the Immaculate Conception. Because of Mary’s role in God’s plan of salvation, she does not suffer from the effects of sin, which are death and decay. Mary is the first to receive the fullness of the redemption that her son has won for all of humanity. The Church, therefore, recognizes Mary as the sign of the salvation promised to all.

Today’s Gospel highlights Mary’s faith. Mary’s faith enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people’s history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God’s plan of salvation.

GOD’S WARRIOR QUEEN CYCLE B ORDINARY TIME WEEK 20 by Bishop Robert Barron August 14th 2022

Friends, today on this marvelous Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin, we celebrate Mary’s Assumption, body and soul, into heaven. But this does not mean that she has gone away; she is a warrior, involved in the struggle against evil from a new vantage point.

Gospel: Luke 1:39-56 The Almighty has done great things for me

Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’
And Mary said:

‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name, and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him. He has shown the power of his arm, he has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away. He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy – according to the promise he made to our ancestors – of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’

Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home.

REFLECTION

Petition: Mary, help me to grow in humility.

1. Prompt and Joyful Charity: What has impelled Mary to undertake her perilous journey not only alone, but also in haste? An irresistible force was acting within Mary: the presence of the Holy Spirit overshadowed and filled her since the moment of the Annunciation. This same Holy Spirit has filled the heart of Elizabeth at Mary’s greeting and moved the infant within her womb. What is the first fruit of the fullness of the Holy Spirit? Joy. Pope-Emeritus Benedict XVI comments on the relationship of joy to the truth who is Christ himself: “Jesus Christ, who is the fullness of truth, attracts to himself the heart of every man, dilates it, and fills it with joy. Only the truth is capable of invading the mind and making it fully joyful. This joy expands the dimensions of the human spirit, raising it from the anxieties of egoism, making it capable of authentic love” (Discourse to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, February 10, 2005).

2. Elizabeth – The Unworthy Host: Elizabeth’s moving question reflects the one virtue necessary for a person to be invaded by the Holy Spirit: humility. Elizabeth is profoundly aware of her own lowliness in the face of a visit from the mother of her Lord. Mary herself echoes these sentiments of deep humility throughout her Magnificat. What is the reason her Creator has done great things for her, so much so that all generations will call her blessed? It is not due to any talent or quality she might possess of herself. There is no magnificent grandeur by which she has captivated the Almighty. God has simply “looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness.” Do I rejoice in my own littleness, knowing that it enables the Holy Spirit to make his dwelling within me and do great things for Christ with my life?

3. The Hymn of God’s Praise: Mary is so filled with the Holy Spirit that her whole being bursts forth in a hymn of joy and praise to the Almighty. Pope-Emeritus Benedict reflects on Mary’s joy at the infant Lord’s presence within her womb: “This is the joy the heart feels when we kneel to adore Jesus in faith” (Discourse to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, February 10, 2005). The joy of Christ, the joy of the Holy Spirit, gratitude to God for the great things he has done in us, impels us to bring Our Lord to others, just as Mary brought him to Elizabeth even before his birth. As she sings her Magnificat, Mary does not remain closed within herself, but reflects on what God has done for her in light of his saving plan for all his people. May the joy of the Holy Spirit bring about a new Pentecost that radiates from our lives.

Conversation with Christ: Thank you, Lord! The great gift of your Holy Spirit fills our lives with the unspeakable joy of your own presence within us. Help me to respond with haste — as Mary did — to the impulses of charity from the Holy Spirit.

Resolution: I will look for occasions to speak about Christ with others and do acts of charity for them with joy and haste, just as Mary did in the Gospel.

Why is Mary important? A fun Catholic reflection for kids based on the readings for the Solemnity of the Assumption.. Support this channel on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/catholickidsm… Or on Venmo: @catholickidsmedia Catholic Kids Media

In Sunday’s Gospel: Luke 1:39-56 Mary greets Elizabeth and sings God’s praise.

Mary’s song of praise reminds us that God is always working for the salvation of the world. We foster a spirit of praise and thanksgiving when we invite young people to recognize that God is still working in their lives today. Younger children may need support in recognizing and appreciating the many wonderful ways that God works in our lives. With Mary as our model, we praise God for all he does for us.

We are celebrating an important holy day in our Church year. On August 15 we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day we remember that Mary was taken to heaven, body and soul. Our Gospel reading for today is taken from Luke’s Gospel, and it tells us why Mary received such a special privilege from God. Let’s listen carefully to this Gospel.

God does so many wonderful things for us. When we are aware of these many things, we can praise God in prayer or song. We can also make art to praise God. Think of someone or something you want to praise God for.

Who are the two people spoken about in today’s Gospel? (Elizabeth and Mary) What is about to happen to each of them? (Both of them are expecting a baby.) Remember that Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist. She was very old and had not yet had any children. But God chose her and Zechariah to be the parents of John the Baptist, who was to announce Jesus’ coming. How does Mary respond to Elizabeth’s greeting? (She sings a song of praise to God.

Mary recognized the wonderful things God did through her, and she praised him. Mary’s faith allowed her to recognize God’s work in her life and in her people’s history. She is a model for the Church because of her participation in God’s plan of salvation.

What did Mary say when God told her she would be Jesus’ mother? (She said yes.) In today’s Gospel reading, Mary visits Elizabeth. Both of them are about to become mothers. Let’s pay attention to learn how Mary praises God.

Mary praises God for all he has done for her and for his people. God truly blessed Mary. Today we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We remember that Mary was taken to heaven, body and soul.

Let’s sing a song praising God for our blessings, just as Mary did. When it’s your turn, show us your drawing and tell us what you drew. Then we’ll sing together, “We praise you God.”

Closing prayer: Let us all say the Hail Mary prayer together

Family Connection

In today’s Gospel, Elizabeth and Mary recognize the work that God is doing through them. With eyes of faith they see the power and salvation of God breaking through into their lives and into the world.

Gather as a family and talk about what you know about Mary and her being a model of faith. Recall that we are celebrating a holy day, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day we remember that God took Mary to heaven, body and soul. Read together today’s Gospel, Luke 1:39-56. In this reading we hear Mary’s song of praise to God, the Magnificat. Invite each person in the family to write or draw one or more ways in which they see God working in your family life and in our world today. Use these prayers of thanksgiving to create your family’s song of praise to God. Conclude by praying together this song of praise.

A prayer for Ukraine, Russia and peace

O God,
it is your will to hold both heaven and earth
in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love
shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
and give peace to Ukraine,
peace among nations,
and peace in our hearts,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

My Dearest Parishioners, Visitors, Friends – Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Jesus’ instructions on how to be ready for the coming judgment continue in the stories and sayings found in today’s Gospel. We are not to be like the greedy rich man in last Sunday’s Gospel who planned to store his great harvest in barns rather than share it. We are, rather, to share our wealth with those in need. The antidote for the anxiety brought on by the coming judgment is to relinquish our possessions and provide for the needs of others. Our treasure will be in heaven where it will not wear out or be destroyed.

The other major way to be ready for the coming judgment is to be watchful. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about watchfulness to begin making this point. We must be like servants waiting for the master’s return from a wedding banquet, which, even now, can last for a few days in the Middle East. We must be watchful so that even if the master comes after midnight, we will be ready for him. This is what the coming of the Son of Man will be like.

Peter asks if this parable is meant for the apostles or for the large crowd that has gathered to listen to Jesus. Without answering Peter’s question, Jesus responds with another parable about servants awaiting the return of their master. It begins with a question: “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?” This parable adds to the theme of watchfulness; it explains how to wait and reminds us of the reward for the faithful follower at the heavenly banquet after the judgment. If it is addressed to the apostles, then it could also be addressed to leadership in the early Church. Either way, the parables reminds us that we should be found doing our jobs when the master arrives. If we are doing our jobs, our reward will be great. But if we relax, neglect our duties, and begin to act like the greedy rich man—eating, drinking, and making merry—we will not have a place in the kingdom. Watchfulness means living in such a consistently moral and obedient way that we are always ready to give an account to God of how we have lived.

with Blessings Father Simon

HOLIDAYS:

Loving Father, during this time of rest and relaxation, please repair in me whatever is weary or broken, and revive my drooping spirit.
Let this holiday be a graced time of recollection and rejuvenation, of deeper self-awareness and eager self-giving.
May it be an occasion of refreshment and reinvigoration, a time to reclaim my friendship with Jesus Christ,
who is Lord now and for ever. Amen.

REFLECTION:

Opening Prayer: Thank you for the gift of this new day. Thank you for the gift of faith, which allows me to seek to live this day meaningfully. You know that I come into your presence filled with a desire to praise you and to receive the grace I need to glorify you by my life. Enlighten me, Lord, and strengthen me.

Encountering Christ:

Unexpected Arrival: Jesus makes clear that although we know that he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, we do not know when he will come. And so, we must always be ready: You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. Jesus invites us to a daily lifestyle marked by a keen awareness of life’s brevity and eternal trajectory. Either the second coming or our own death is always close by. This theme appears throughout the Bible, especially in the wisdom literature: As for man, his days are like the grass; he blossoms like a flower in the field. A wind sweeps over it and it is gone; its place knows it no more (Psalms 103:15-16). Is that how we live? Do we see ourselves, our work, our decisions, and our relationships from this perspective? A common exercise for a spiritual retreat is to sit down and write one’s own eulogy, what we would want to be said about how we lived when our earthly journey is complete. Taking time to reflect on our lives from this perspective can help us gain clarity and focus, enabling us to live each day more truly and more fully.

Eternal Repercussions: Jesus explains that our experience at the end of history–either our own personal history or the history of the world as a whole–will be directly affected by how we choose to live in history. If we live responsibly, loving God and neighbor by seeking and embracing God’s will day by day until the end, we will be blessed. But if we block out the eternal perspective and live only for self-indulgence and self-glorification, we will suffer for it. And the suffering will be in proportion to the level of awareness we had of our true responsibilities. Some commentators see in this passage an allusion to purgatory, since Jesus points out that those who are grossly irresponsible in this life–the ones who act irresponsibly even though they are fully aware of what God was asking of them–will be beaten severely, while those who acted similarly with less awareness will be beaten only lightly. There are degrees of suffering as well as degrees of glory on the other side. Jesus wants us to know this. Theologians can’t explain completely how exactly this works, but we can’t ignore Christ’s clear revelation that our choices here on earth will have eternal consequences. How much does this awareness affect my daily life? How much would Christ like it to affect my daily life? How would my daily life look different if I lived with a greater awareness of this truth?

Great Expectations: When Jesus summarizes his parable by saying, Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more, how do I react? An unhealthy reaction would be to think that I need to earn God’s love by putting on a good performance. Jesus doesn’t say that God’s love for us depends on our behavior. In fact, his love for us is complete and overflowing regardless of our “performance.” The mere fact of our existence is proof of this—if God didn’t love us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3), he wouldn’t have created us in the first place. Another unhealthy reaction would be to turn away from God because he is too demanding, too authoritarian. Jesus is not being unreasonably demanding with us simply by encouraging us to live responsibly. In fact, being faithful and prudent stewards of the great gift of life, and all that goes with it, is merely the path to joy and fulfillment. Squandering our gifts may promise some immediate pleasures, but we are not made for those; we are made for lasting relationships and meaningful activity. And so, a healthy reaction to Jesus’s apparently stark answer to St. Peter’s question would be joyful relief. Jesus has designed the universe in such a way that the deepest longings of our hearts can actually be fulfilled, through living in friendship with him. This is a far cry from the emptiness and angst brought to us by the postmodern view of human life as a meaningless and hopeless blip on the universe’s epiphenomenal radar screen.

Conversing with Christ: Thank you, Lord, for giving me work to do for you in your Kingdom. Thank you for entrusting me with so much—with my life and talents, with the sacraments and faith itself, with the people around me and connected to me. I want to be a faithful and prudent steward of all your gifts. I want to live on the wavelength of glad gratitude, joyfully fulfilling my duties with the knowledge that in doing so I get to exercise my love for you and comfort your Sacred Heart.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will have a conversation with my spiritual director, or a trusted mentor of some sort, about how I use my time, and how I could use it more responsibly, for God’s glory and the advance of his Kingdom in my heart and in the hearts of those around me.

The game is played by giving each player a list of clues which, if followed correctly, will lead them to find a "treasure." Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 07-08-2022

Faith of Our Fathers: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time We are born of the faith of our fathers, descending from a great cloud of witnesses whose faith is attested to on every page of Scripture (see Hebrews 12:1). We have been made His people, chosen for His own inheritance, as we sing in this Sunday’s Psalm. The Liturgy this week sings the praises of our fathers, recalling the defining moments in our “family history.” In the Epistle, we remember the calling of Abraham; in the First Reading we relive the night of the Exodus and the summons of the holy children of Israel. Our fathers, we are told, trusted in the Word of God, put their faith in His oaths. They were convinced that what He promised, He would do. None of them lived to see His promises made good. Commentary on Wisdom 18:6-9; Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19; Luke 12:32-48

Where your treasure is, there will be your heart be also. We continue today with the theme of last Sunday’s Mass (18th Sunday in Year C). There we heard a parable Jesus told about a man who made a great deal of money and was very happy with himself. “My barns are full. Now I can sit back and enjoy the rest of my life.” But his Lord said, “You fool! Tonight you will die and leave all your money and property behind. Someone else will enjoy all the fruits of your hard work.” And, when that man died and went before his God, what had he to offer? All that stuff in his barns? No, all that had to be left behind for others. When my turn comes to face my God and he asks me what I have and I respond: “Well, during my lifetime I managed to ...

Hymn for Today: Lyrics – Passion – Even So Come (Live) ft. Kristian Stanfill

Behind the Song: - Passion - Even So Come (Live) ft. Kristian Stanfill Passion exists to glorify God by uniting students in worship, prayer, and justice for spiritual awakening in this generation. Passion has encountered millions of students and 18-25 year olds, young people whose lives have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. One of the most impactful and stirring aspects of the movement has been the sea of voices uniting together to lift up the name of Jesus, currently helmed by Kristian Stanfill, Brett Younker and Melodie Malone. BISHOP PHILIP EGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY MASS, Thursday 29 September, 12 Noon at St John’s Cathedral, Portsmouth  10 years ago, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Msgr. Cn. Philip Egan as Bishop of our Diocese. The Cathedral Chapter of Canons would like to organise a Thanksgiving Mass in his honour followed by a reception in the Cathedral Centre. We hope that everyone will be able to attend. Holy Communion from the Chalice?

Recently, Canon Chris Thomas, the General Secretary to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, was asked whether the time was now right for Holy Communion from the chalice to be restored – Holy Communion under both kinds - now that many other COVID restrictions in society have been eased. This was his response on behalf of the Bishops’ Conference. “The Bishops Conference have been asked to look into the possible resumption of the reception of Holy Communion under both kinds to the congregation. Having taken advice from Professor Jim McManus, it was thought that it would not be ...

To reiterate this point, I would ask you to consider one of the following posts: • Altar Servers • Cantors to sing and help lift the liturgy • Catechists for RCIA, Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation • Cleaners • Extraordinary Ministers of Communion • Finance Committee members • Flower arrangers • SVP personnel These are just some of the roles that need to be filled. Thank you. Fr Simon ...

    Parish Devotions this month

    Immaculate Heart of Mary

    Month of the Immaculate Heart

The month of August (Overview - Calendar) is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart. Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person and is the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue. This devotion has received new emphasis in this century from the visions ...

    Consecration to the Immaculate Heart

Pope Paul VI,, on the floor of the Vatican Council at the close of the third session, renewed publicly the consecration of the Church and the world to Mary's Immaculate Heart. He said that his thoughts turned to the whole world "which our venerated predecessor Pius XII . . . not without inspiration from on high, solemnly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. . . . O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Council, to you we recommend the entire Church." When he visited Fatima on May 13, 1967, the same Pope recalled this"consecration which we ourselves have renewed on ...

    Reparation to the Immaculate Heart

Our very consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary calls upon us to make reparation for the offenses that we and others have committed against her. The Church, in inviting us to consecrate ourselves to her Immaculate Heart, implicitly calls upon us for this reparation. But more explicitly, and even before Fatima, Saint Pius X offered a plenary indulgence to all who on the first Saturday of the month would observe special devotions in honour of the Immaculate Virgin in a spirit of reparation for the blasphemies uttered against her. There is, however, an even more basic reason why each ...

August is the month of the Blessed Sacrament and dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The month of August is dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The entire month falls within the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. The last portion of the liturgical year represents the time of our pilgrimage ...

August Month of the Blessed Sacrament

We know, as Catholics, that we encounter Jesus whenever we go to Mass and experience the Consecration. When wine and bread are transformed into Body and Blood, and we receive Him, we are transformed. It grants a special grace to handle the trials of Christian living. Consecrated hosts are kept in a sacred container called a ciborum that is housed inside the tabernacle. The tabernacle is what we are to face when we genuflect at Mass. Some parishes have designated times where the prayerful contemplation called Eucharistic Adoration take place. This is a wonderful exercise for our spiritual muscle. Take ...

    A Time to Persevere

The days of summer have provided a welcome change of pace. However, while vacations afford us the time to relax and refresh, the change of habits and routines can also have a negative impact on our spiritual lives. As if to re-ignite us, the Church offers us in the plethora of August feasts vivid examples of the virtue of perseverance: six martyrs — two who are named in Canon I of the Mass and two who were martyred during World War II; seven founders of religious congregations, as well as three popes and two kings; the apostle, St. Bartholomew; the ...

It began bleeding when consecrated and part of it became human tissue. Updated Coronavirus Safety Guidelines

Track and trace: code. Please use the QR Code (on the back of the church). Simply hold your camera app over the code and follow the instructions. This would be helpful should a local outbreak of the virus be detected.
Ventilation:In order for us to comply with regulations and therefore be considered a ‘COVID secure environment’ the doors must be left open. As the temperature drops in the weeks ahead it will be important to wrap-up warm for Mass! Please do bear this in mind.

Please remember the advice is to wear a mask inside closed areas and churches.
