Our Homeless Friend – Diana Clark
Things have changed in Albert Road in the last few months. Previously, we would meet up to twelve people each evening, when handing out sandwiches and hot drinks but now there are only one or two because they have been ‘moved on’ and are now scattered in other parts of the city. We miss them as they have become our friends, and they were just beginning to trust us. However, we do still see some of them occasionally and they know they can always come to St. Swithun’s if they need anything and that we will try to help them.
Recently I bumped into ‘T’ one of our first friends who was happy to tell me that he has just moved into an ‘assisted living’ house after several months in Hope House, which is joyous news! Another two of our friends, ‘A’ and ‘C’ have been given places in Hope House this week and we hope it will be a start for them on the road to a new life.
Sunday lunch is going well, with up to 40-50 guests each week. As well as those who cook, we have lots of helpers who also chat to the guests and give out clothes and toiletries when needed. Some of our Polish guests now make the soup each week and help to set the tables and other helpful duties. One Sunday, a guest came and gave us a donation of £10 that he had just been given when playing his guitar in the street. It is wonderful how many of them want to help us and are befriending and helping each other and also heartening to see some of them return to Mass. More than once, someone has stopped me in the street to say they will never forget how St. Swithun’s helped them when they needed it most.
Finally, on a last note as the cold weather is now upon us, A plea for Warm clothes for our Lunch @ 2 guests:
