St Peter Get Behind Me Satan

WE THANK GOD THAT WE ARE NOW ALLOWED TO CELEBRATE HOLY MASS IN OUR CHURCH

From the 8th August this is mandatory from the Government.

My Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters in Christ

“Poor Peter – called ‘Satan’. Jesus can be quite dramatic. – Today’ Gospel is about not thinking in human ways but God’s’

REFLECTION

The tempter in his life was always called ‘Satan’, as in the temptations in the desert and in the garden at Gethsemane. When Peter thinks in only human ways, he loses faith that what Jesus does to follow his call in life is from God. Last week he was called a ‘rock;’ because he united himself with the will of God for Jesus. When he thinks only in a In human way, he is the opposite. We might call Satan by other names, but this is the reality we need to address when we are drawn away from the way of Jesus. We can do this in our own selfishness and for each other. A young person following a good call to give life or some of life to God in permanent or part-time commitment will meet opposition.

When we make decisions for integrity in our lives, for honesty and for generosity we will often meet similar opposition. The culture today can be quite narcissistic, where we place our own wants and desires above the desires of others, no matter what our age. Jesus asserts that in following him we find the fullest meaning of life, even if we lose some of our desires on the way, or have to go against some of the prevailing culture. In losing our lives with him, we find the fullest happiness. Lord, may your kingdom come among us.

Introductory Prayer:

Lord God, I come from dust, and to dust, I shall return. You, however, existed before all time, and every creature takes its being from you. You formed me in my mother’s womb with infinite care, and you watch over me tenderly. I hope you will embrace my soul at my death to carry me home to heaven to be with you forever. Thank you for looking upon me and blessing me with your love. Take my love in return. I humbly offer you all that I am.

Petition: Lord, help me to become a saint by denying myself, taking up my cross and following you.

1. The Purgative Way: In today’s Gospel Christ presents three ways to Christian perfection: “If anyone wants to become my follower, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” The first step, self-denial, is called “the purgative way” by some spiritual mystics. Have you ever noticed that to advance, a time of purging is necessary? Champion football teams have to work hard during the hot August two-times-a-day practices. The same could be said for our striving for holiness; we must be purged and purified in many ways. It is essential that we hate sin and avoid it at all cost by fighting temptation. Our sentiments, passions, memory, and imagination must be placed under the rule of our faith, intellect and will. Beginning a prayer life requires effort, fight, and constancy. By embracing the cross of the purification process, we can advance in holiness.

2. The Illuminative Way: A second step in the spiritual life can be summarized as “take up his cross.” A soul in this step has achieved a certain measure of self-control over the force of his passions, avoids any grave sins, and has deep convictions regarding the truths of our faith. Their present task is to progress in good, strengthening themselves, especially in charity. They seek to adorn themselves with Christ’s virtues and to make Christ the center of their thoughts, affections, and actions. These souls could be compared to an experienced mother who is raising the youngest of her children or an athlete who has the fundamentals down and is playing at peak performance. How happy and balanced our lives are when we arrive at this level in our spiritual life. Christ invites us to this level of friendship with him; all we have to do is say yes, work hard and trust in God’s grace.

3. The Unitive Way: The third step in the spiritual life, the unitive way, can be described by Christ’s words: “Follow me.” Once we go through the purification of our own body and soul and are steeped in the practice of virtue, we are ready to be among the closest followers of Christ, the saints! In this level, we are detached from created things, and our primary focus is on the presence of the Creator who dwells in our hearts. Love of God becomes the driving force in our life, and we can say with our Lord, “I always do what pleases him” (John 8:29). Deep union with God in prayer, never resisting grace, and perfect mastery over ourselves bring us to see crosses and difficulties with great joy. So have many souls arrived at this state of heaven on earth: John Paul II, Mother Teresa, and the many unknown husbands and wives, students and scholars who have taken Christ’s call seriously and followed him above all else.

Conversation with Christ:

Lord Jesus, I ask you for the courage to continue to follow your call to holiness. Help me to know where it is you want me to become more like you, and give me the strength to form myself into the saint of which you have always dreamed. Mother Mary, I entrust my spiritual life into your maternal care.

Resolution: I will invite someone to go to Sunday Mass today.

with Blessings and prayerful best wishes, Father Marcin Drabik

These weeks of lockdown are difficult for all of us, and we are particularly mindful of those whose jobs and lives are put on hold because of the pandemic. We want to be here for you during these difficult times. Even so, the Church in our Diocese of Portsmouth, its clergy, parishes and schools, is entirely dependent upon your generous charity. So that we can continue to provide the Liturgy of the Lord and our works, both centrally and from our parishes to the local community, I kindly ask all of the faithful who are able to do so, to continue their generous regular-giving to the Diocese and to their parish churches, which would otherwise lose vital income. You can donate via the button on the Parish website – or here

Important Notice – Timetable for First Communion Children

Dear parents You will have received a letter from Fr Marcin regarding the arrangements for First Confession and First Communion. Because COVID 19 has confronted us with unexpected issues, Fr Marcin has taken into account the reality that some families already feel safe enough to come to church for Mass each week . Therefore he decided that he should arrange Holy Communion in two or maybe three separate cohorts starting with this group whose parents already feel safe enough …

Saint for Today Sunday 30th Aug 2020 – Saint Jeanne Jugan’s Story

Saint Jeanne Jugan’s Story – (October 25, 1792 – August 29, 1879)

Born in northern France during the French Revolution—a time when congregations of women and men religious were being suppressed by the national government, Jeanne would eventually be highly praised in the French academy for her community’s compassionate care of elderly poor people. When Jeanne was three and a half years old, her father, a fisherman, was lost at sea. Her widowed mother was hard pressed to raise her …

Fr. Mike Schmitz Answers – ANGRY WITH GOD? TELL HIM HOW YOU FEEL

Q: How can I pray to God when I am so disappointed in Him? I am often angry at God because it feels like nothing I do ever works out. It feels hypocritical to then just go and tell God that everything is OK. Things aren’t OK in my life!

A: First, amazing question. I am certain that your question arises from a heart that has been broken in some way. Please know of my prayers for you and …

What is it like being Catholic and a scientist?

Scientists have a message for young believers: Do not be afraid to go into science! You will not be alone.

Persons of committed religious belief have made a great number of historic scientific contributions. However, it’s no secret that today, science and religion are often falsely viewed as adversaries.“The cultural forces at work in America have greatly muddied the waters … and created this kind of false binary” between science and religion, says Dr. Kate Bulinski, …

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 30-08-2020

For Your Life: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s First Reading catches the prophet Jeremiah in a moment of weakness. His intimate lamentation contains some of the strongest language of doubt found in the Bible. Following God’s call, he feels abandoned. Preaching His Word has brought him only derision and reproach. But God does not deceive—and Jeremiah knows this. God tests the just (see Jeremiah 20:11–12), and disciplines His children through their sufferings and trials (see Hebrews 12:5–7). What Jeremiah learns, Jesus states explicitly in today’s Gospel. To follow Him is to take up a cross, to deny yourself—your priorities, preferences, and comforts. It is to be willing to give it all up, even life itself, for the sake of His gospel. As Paul says in today’s Epistle, we have to join ourselves to the passion of Christ, to offer our bodies—our whole beings—as living sacrifices to …

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week – 30-08-2020

Fr. Mike’s words on taking up our crosses may come as a relief to many of us. He rejects the “harder is holier” approach, and reminds us that taking up our crosses is ultimately about having more freedom. Christ says “My yoke is easy, and my is burden light” (Matthew 11:30). God has a particular task for each of us, and taking up our crosses means denying what we want for our lives so that we can do God’s will. After all, that is what we were made to do and the only way to truly be free. “Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:24-25). Background on the Gospel Reading Today’s …

Children – Read today’s Holy Readings here again 30-08-2020

Catholic Kids Homilies – “Get behind me, Satan!” A fun Catholic homily for kids based on the readings for the 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time, cycle A Dear Children, in Sunday’s Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27 ‘Get behind me, Satan!’ I have something to show you. (Hold up one of the crosses.) You know what this is, don’t you? Of course you do, it is a cross. I have several crosses to show you. Here is a cross on a chain that you can wear around your neck. Here is a bookmark made in the shape of a cross, and this is a beautiful cross that is made to be hung on a wall. Every day we see crosses all around us. People wear them as jewelry, they hang them on the wall, and they use them as key chains. When you pass by a church, it is not unusual to see a …

Commentary on Jeremiah 20:7-9; Romans 12:1-2; Matthew 16:21-27

IN LAST WEEK’S GOSPEL we saw the disciples riding high. They had, through Peter, acknowledged that Jesus, their teacher and friend, was no less than the long-awaited Messiah-King of Israel. “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” It must have been a really exciting moment for them. This, in turn, brought from Jesus a commission of the highest responsibility to Peter and his fellow disciples. Through Jesus, they were to be given the authority of God himself within their future communities. Peter himself is spoken of as a rock, firm and unshakeable, on which the ekklesia, the Church community, will be built. It is hard to imagine that this was not a moment of particular joy and satisfaction for the disciples. They now were thinking that Jesus, in line with Jewish expectations, would be a glorious and powerful king. And they, of course, as his followers and companions …

Why did God give us freedom?

Why did God give us freedom?

God gave us freedom so that we may freely choose him and do what is true, good and beautiful. Sometimes when we look at the world around us, it is tempting to question why God gave us freedom in the first place. From our point of view, it might seem better if everyone simply did the same thing and didn’t have to make difficult choices. However, God gave us freedom for a reason, and it is a gift we need to understand in order to use it properly. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that “Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and …

Merridith Frediani – Pray for Your Loved Ones (St. Monica’s Timeless Advice)

When I became a parent there were things I didn’t expect. I didn’t expect to become immune to barf. I didn’t expect to have a child with the trifecta of allergies, eczema, and asthma. I didn’t expect to be happy to sit in a field getting rained on while watching someone play soccer. But one big thing I did not see coming was how important prayer would be. In hindsight, that seems rather dim of me to not expect it, but a big lesson I have learned is that I absolutely cannot do this parenting thing on my own. As …

Dr. James Merrick – How to Read Scripture: Wisdom from St. Augustine

How many times have you sat down to read a passage of Scripture only to scratch your head and puzzle about what’s going on? Or, have you ever come across a troubling passage of Scripture and wondered how it could be inspired by a good and loving God? We’ve all had bad encounters with Scripture where it doesn’t make sense or seems wrong in some way. And many people have rejected or walked away from faith because of a bad experience with Scripture. In fact, this was the experience of the great St. Augustine (354-430) whom we celebrate August 28. Augustine wrestled …

UPDATE ON FIRST HOLY COMMUNION 2020 Programme

We plan to complete this year’s First Holy Communion Children before the end of this year. The plan is to work with smaller groups. Please check the 2 posts below for more information and the relevant timetables for the 1st Group. Father Marcin would have sent letters to our parents outlining the plan and relevant timetable. – Brian and Linda

First Holy Communion

Video Course for Our First Communion Children returning to Mass

Dear parents We are invited to return to Mass We are aware that some people are still apprehensive about returning to Mass. Some families returned to Mass on Saturday/Sunday.

Therefore he decided that he should arrange Holy Communion in two or maybe three separate cohorts starting with this group whose parents already feel safe enough. This chart shows the timetable for this first group: The other children are not forgotten but we will need to wait …

Parish Devotions this month

Immaculate Heart of Mary

Month of the Immaculate Heart

The month of August (Overview – Calendar) is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart. Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person and is the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue. This devotion has received new emphasis in this century from the visions … Read more here

Consecration to the Immaculate Heart

Pope Paul VI,, on the floor of the Vatican Council at the close of the third session, renewed publicly the consecration of the Church and the world to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. He said that his thoughts turned to the whole world “which our venerated predecessor Pius XII . . . not without inspiration from on high, solemnly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. . . . O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Council, to you we recommend the entire Church.” When he visited Fatima on May 13, 1967, the same Pope recalled this“consecration which we ourselves have renewed on … Read more here

Reparation to the Immaculate Heart

Our very consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary calls upon us to make reparation for the offenses that we and others have committed against her. The Church, in inviting us to consecrate ourselves to her Immaculate Heart, implicitly calls upon us for this reparation. But more explicitly, and even before Fatima, Saint Pius X offered a plenary indulgence to all who on the first Saturday of the month would observe special devotions in honour of the Immaculate Virgin in a spirit of reparation for the blasphemies uttered against her. There is, however, an even more basic reason why each … Read more here

August- The Blessed Sacrament & Immaculate Heart of Mary

August is the month of the Blessed Sacrament and dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The month of August is dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The entire month falls within the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. The last portion of the liturgical year represents the time of our pilgrimage … Read more here
August Month of the Blessed Sacrament

August Month of the Blessed Sacrament

We know, as Catholics, that we encounter Jesus whenever we go to Mass and experience the Consecration. When wine and bread are transformed into Body and Blood, and we receive Him, we are transformed. It grants a special grace to handle the trials of Christian living. Consecrated hosts are kept in a sacred container called a ciborum that is housed inside the tabernacle. The tabernacle is what we are to face when we genuflect at Mass. Some parishes have designated times where the prayerful contemplation called Eucharistic Adoration take place. This is a wonderful exercise for our spiritual muscle. Take … Read more here
A Time to Persevere

A Time to Persevere

The days of summer have provided a welcome change of pace. However, while vacations afford us the time to relax and refresh, the change of habits and routines can also have a negative impact on our spiritual lives. As if to re-ignite us, the Church offers us in the plethora of August feasts vivid examples of the virtue of perseverance: six martyrs — two who are named in Canon I of the Mass and two who were martyred during World War II; seven founders of religious congregations, as well as three popes and two kings; the apostle, St. Bartholomew; the … Read more here

Eucharistic Miracles of the World

Where: The parish of Saint Mary in Buenos Aires What happened: While both other miracles are definitely worth finding out about, the most interesting and comprehensive study was done with the 1996 Eucharist. It began bleeding when consecrated and part of it became human tissue. After several intense studies, it was found that the tissue was part of a heart, a muscle of the myocardium, the left ventricle, the muscle that gives life to the whole heart and body. The tissue revealed further that it belonged to a person who had gone through intense pain, experiencing extended periods of time … Read more here

Pope Francis Message – 4th World Day of the Poor 2020

14/11/2020
