My Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Jesus tells us “to put our hands where our hearts are”  – Today’s Gospel is about us putting the Gospel into action:

‘Teach me, Lord to be a faith-filled doer of the word of God, even if my life not be perfect.’

REFLECTION

We all know people who promise the earth! They say they will do something and never deliver. Others make a song and dance when asked to do something, but do it. It can be from helping in the home to co-operating on something big. In the end we are more pleased with the grumpy doer than the smiling non-doer. Jesus means action when he speaks his message. While he is happy that people listen and pray and say good things, he is looking for men and women who put their hands where their hearts are, and put the gospel into action. We are people whose light is to shine before others, and not be hidden.

He has a shocking way of saying this – that some of the most looked down on people will find their way into the kingdom of heaven because they do the works of God – they love and care, they help and encourage. They are not just spiritual thinkers, but faith-filled doers of the word of God, even when their lives are not perfect. Jesus comes back to this often: not those ‘who say Lord, Lord will go into the kingdom’, but those whose lives show the gospel of the kingdom. Jesus speaks often of the vineyard; it is the place of God’s work. It needs planting, and nourishment and then the fruit is picked and becomes the wine of life; it also becomes his blood. When he speaks of someone working in his vineyard, he is speaking of building up the community of his disciples in what we say and do. We can at times also enjoy the vineyard, sunning ourselves in it as the grapes sun themselves to ripen. Then we are asked to tend it, to care for it, and to bring forth fruit that will last.

Introductory Prayer: In you, Lord, I find all my joy and happiness. How could I offend you by chasing after fleeting success and lifeless trophies? I believe in you because you are truth itself. I hope in you because you are faithful to your promises. I love you because you have loved me first. I am a sinner; nevertheless, you have given me so many blessings. I humbly thank you.

Petition: Lord, help me to follow you, regardless of circumstances and times.

1. A Higher Authority: Jesus is in Jerusalem, exchanging words with the Pharisees. They have tried to trap our Lord by asking him from where he gets his authority. Our Lord, in his wit, turns it back to them. He asks them a question which brings them to accuse themselves of lacking fidelity to God. Jesus is looking for faith. Faith is the attitude that searches for an authority in life higher than one’s own. When God calls us to live his will, we should in faith accept it and live it. Even if it seems inconvenient or uncomfortable to us, we should not look for ways to live outside it. It is very important that we bypass inauthentic outlooks on life.

2. Christ’s Mentality: If we are to understand this Gospel passage, we must make an effort to rid ourselves of the “modern mentality.” In the modern mentality, we do whatever we please as long as we don’t step on anyone else’s toes. Jesus proposes a different mentality. Jesus suggests that we not only listen to but also do the will of God in our lives. Neither son in this parable was perfectly in tune with Christ’s suggestion, but at least one of the sons came to his senses and repented for his stubbornness of heart.

3. An Apparent Defeat: Many of us reading through this scene would congratulate Jesus for putting down his enemies and winning the debate. We would toss confetti at the Lord for his wisdom and knowledge in getting out of this predicament. This, though, wasn’t the case. Jesus felt it as a loss. He did not care about appearing better than the others. He left this encounter saddened because he truly desired that the Pharisees believe him and accept his saving message. We ought not to try to shine over our foes. Instead, we should work hard to help them see the light.

Conversation with Christ: With even a little of your charity, I could certainly be a son of two “yeses.” Help me to say “yes” when you ask me something and also to do it immediately – without hesitating for even a moment. Lord, may your will be done!

Resolution: This week, when the alarm goes off early to start my day, I will make an effort to be diligent and punctual for love of God’s will.

with Blessings and prayerful best wishes, Father Marcin Drabik

Updated Coronavirus Safety Guidelines

WELCOME BACK! To those who wish to return to Mass at a time when our Church is not crowded, it is recommended to come to the VIGIL MASS of SUNDAY – on Saturdays at 6.00PM or on SUNDAYS at 8.30AM when there is plenty of room in the body of the Church. Members of the congregation are well spaced out. Now that we have to wear masks, this is an additional precaution which prevents others being infected; however, some people have medical exemption. Sanitising hands on entry lessens the possibility of the virus being spread by touching surfaces.

There are signs on the floor indicating two metres so that we do not crowd up on one another.

TEST & TRACE: We will also take a contact number for all attendees. These details will be destroyed after 21 days according to data management regulations. Anyone is free to decline and still attend Mass but we encourage you to take part.

The Diocese has updated its Coronavirus guidance in the light of the latest Government instructions issued on 14th September 2020. There is a little more flexibility in some areas than previously, for example, in ministry to the sick and housebound, although great care must still be taken. The use of halls and the possibility of reinstating some group meetings are covered. There is limited scope for general socialising because the ‘Rule of 6’ has been imposed. Our churches are very COVID-safe, provided everyone is following the proper safety procedures. Our thanks as ever to clergy and parishioners who are working hard at this. One area, however, that remains a challenge is having sufficient volunteers (e.g. stewards and cleaners) to assist. If you are hale and hearty, please do offer to help– your assistance will enable many more people to return to Mass, thereby bringing them closer to Jesus Christ through His Church. Let us all pray for a speedy end to the pandemic.

Please remember the advice is to wear a mask inside closed areas and churches.

Saint for Today Sunday 27th Sept 2020 – Saint Vincent de Paul

Saint Vincent de Paul’s Story (1580 – September 27, 1660)

The deathbed confession of a dying servant opened Vincent’s eyes to the crying spiritual needs of the peasantry of France. This seems to have been a crucial moment in the life of the man from a small farm in Gascony, France, who had become a priest with little more ambition than to have a comfortable life. It was the Countess de Gondi (whose servant he had helped) who persuaded …

Fr. Mike Schmitz – Is It Ever Okay to Give Up?

When it comes to our big dreams (getting married, having kids, getting into a specific religious order, having a certain job) … is there ever a point where you just have to give it up?

You may have seen the movie Rudy. Its eponymous protagonist is a not-so-athletic college football player who spent years taking hits and practicing with his team, only to see a few moments on the field. Those short moments, however, left him with …

This weekend we bid farewell to Fr. Vittorio Scomparin of the Neo-Catechumenal Way. Vittorio (pictured here on my left surrounded by members of the families) has been resident here in Paulsgrove as the chaplain to the NeoCat families that form the missio ad gentes within the area of St. Paul’s parish. Pope Francis – World Day of Migrants and Refugees Sunday 27th Sep 2020

FORCED LIKE JESUS CHRIST TO FLEE

The Church has been celebrating the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) since 1914. It is always an occasion to express concern for different vulnerable people on the move; to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers. Every year the WDMR is the last Sunday of September; in 2020 it will be celebrated on 27 September. As the title for his annual message, …

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week – 27-09-2020

In Matthew 21, Jesus presents the parable of the two sons where one tells his father that he will not go work in the vineyard but repents (or “changed his mind”) and does go and the other says he will work in his father’s vineyard but doesn’t. The context of this parable is Jesus addressing the leadership of the Jerusalem, which is the fulcrum to discover the meaning of this parable. What is the point and purpose of the parable of the two sons? What is Jesus getting at? Check out this video with Dr. Brant Pitre to learn more about this parable of the two sons. Background on the Gospel Reading The context for today’s Gospel is the mounting tension between Jesus and the Jewish religious leaders. Jesus has entered Jerusalem and overturned the money changers’ tables in the Temple. Jesus has caught the attention of the religious authorities; …

Catholic Kids Homilies – The Parable of the Two Sons! Ordinary Time 26A Dear Children, Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 21:28-32  is based on the Parable of the Two Sons – Jesus explains that “actions speak louder than words.” If our words and our actions do not match, people will not believe that we mean what we say. That’s why we have the expression “actions speak louder than words.” In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells a story about the relationship between words and actions. Have your mother or your father ever asked you to help out around the house by doing some chores? I’m sure that has probably happened to you. This morning I am going to tell a story about a father who had two sons named John and William. One day dad walked into John’s room to find him building a model airplane. “John, we had a lot of wind …

Commentary on Ezekiel 18:25-28; Philippians 2:1-11; Matthew 21:28-32

TODAY WE ARE PRESENTED with another challenge by Jesus to the religious leaders of the people. It consists of a parable about two sons whose father operates a vineyard. He tells one to go and work there. The lad refuses but later changes his mind and goes. The second one is also told to go. He agrees to do so but in the end he does not. “Which of the two did his father’s will?” Jesus asks. They all agree that it was the one who at first would not go but later did so. In case there was any doubt, Jesus then clearly spells out the meaning of his story. Tax collectors and prostitutes, perhaps the most despised of all people from the religious leaders’ point of view, were making their way into the kingdom of God before the chief priests and the elders. In their eyes, it was …

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 27-09-2020

The Humble Path: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Echoing the complaint heard in last week’s readings, today’s First Reading again presents protests that God isn’t fair. Why does He punish with death one who begins in virtue but falls into iniquity, while granting life to the wicked one who turns from sin? This is the question that Jesus takes up in the parable in today’s Gospel. The first son represents the most heinous sinners of Jesus’ day—tax collectors and prostitutes—who by their sin at first refused to serve in the Lord’s vineyard, the kingdom. At the preaching of John the Baptist, they repented and did what was right and just. The second son represents Israel’s leaders—who said they would serve God in the vineyard, but refused to believe John when he told them they must produce good fruits as evidence of their repentance (see Matthew 3:8) …

Russell Shaw - Have you ever seen a “slow miracle”?

Russell Shaw – Have you ever seen a “slow miracle”?

It’s possible you’ve dismissed it as something else. A friend asks me to write about miracles, taking as an example the events that brought him and his wife together in a happy marriage now in its 58th year. To his credit, he doesn’t suggest their case is exceptional. Rather, he sees it as instance of God’s hand at work in their lives, just as God is at work in everyone’s life. Other people, he suggests, might benefit from seeing their lives the same way he and his wife see theirs. The happy experience of my friend and his wife certainly …

Philip Kosloski – Why our actions are more important than what we know

Jesus wanted us to focus on imitating his example, moving our knowledge of the Bible from our head to heart. Jesus wanted us to focus on imitating his example, moving our knowledge of the Bible from our head to heart. It can be tempting at times to treat Christianity as another subject a person might learn at school. We may tackle learning about the Bible or the Catechism as if we needed to pass an exam. While this technique might lead to some success at school, it will probably not bring us closer to our ultimate goal of Heaven. In fact, …

Fr. Mike Schmitz Answers –  NON-CATHOLICS RECEIVING THE EUCHARIST

Q: My non-Catholic friend comes with me to Mass, but she insists on receiving the Eucharist. Is that okay? A: So, I have to encourage you for inviting your friend to Mass. That is exactly what we should be doing as Catholics in the first place. It is extremely important that we are quick to invite our friends and family to Church, and are committed to hospitality. That being said, it is very “not okay” that your friend is receiving Holy Communion. That isn’t anything against hospitality (I’ll get back to that), but is simply the fact of the matter …

First Holy Communion

Video Course for Our First Communion Children returning to Mass

Dear parents We are invited to return to Mass We are aware that some people are still apprehensive about returning to Mass. Some families returned to Mass on Saturday/Sunday. They would have seen that there is a high degree of organisation in place to ensure safe distancing and personal safety. We are much safer in church than in any supermarket. Come during the week at 10am to check it out!! Before Mass every day there is exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00am. At 9:30am there is the Divine Mercy Chaplet with reading from St Sr Faustina followed by Benediction before …

Important Notice – Timetable for First Communion Children

Dear parents You will have received a letter from Fr Marcin regarding the arrangements for First Confession and First Communion. Because COVID 19 has confronted us with unexpected issues, Fr Marcin has taken into account the reality that some families already feel safe enough to come to church for Mass each week . This chart shows the timetable for this first group: The other children are not forgotten but we will need to wait …

Pope Francis Prayer Intentions September 2020 – Respect for the Planet’s Resources

Respect for the Planet’s Resources We pray that the planet’s resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner. We are squeezing out the planet’s goods. Squeezing them out, as if the earth were an orange. Countries and businesses from the global north have enriched themselves by exploiting the natural resources of the south, creating an “ecological debt.” Who is going to pay this debt? In addition, this “ecological debt” is increased when multinationals do abroad what they would never be allowed to do in their own countries. It’s outrageous. Today, not tomorrow; today, we have … Read more here

“CAN-DO CHRISTIANS” A MESSAGE FROM FATHER MARCIN

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Dear Friends: I would like to share with You some things which are about our Parish and for our Parish.  I’m absolutely sure, that You have noticed how many things already happen in our Parish to help in our spiritual grow to love God more and more in His Word to us, in His Sacraments for us (which is His real presence among us). We also go out to meet those who still searching for God, or who were not so lucky to have personal contact with Jesus Christ.

Parish Devotions this month

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Seven Graces of Mary

The Blessed Virgin Mary grants seven graces to the souls who honour her daily by saying seven Hail Mary’s and meditating on her tears and dolors (sorrows). The devotion was passed on by St. Bridget. HERE ARE THE SEVEN GRACES:

  1. I will grant peace to their families.
  2. They will be enlightened about the divine mysteries.
  3. I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them in their work.
  4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.
  5. … Read more here

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Angelic Salutation (Hail Mary) Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. The Seven Sorrows are:

  1. The prophecy of Simeon
  2. The flight into Egypt
  3. The loss of the Holy Child at Jerusalem for three days
  4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary
  5. Standing at the foot of the Cross
  6. Jesus being taken from the Cross
  7. The burial of Christ.

Fr. Faber on the Seven Sorrows

Fr. Faber on the Seven Sorrows

God vouchsafed to select the very things about Him which are most incommunicable, and in a most mysteriously real way communicate them to her. See how He had already mixed her up with the eternal designs of creation, making her almost a partial cause and partial model of it. Our Lady’s co-operation in the redemption of the world gives us a fresh view of her magnificence. Neither the Immaculate Conception nor the Assumption will give us a higher idea of Mary’s exaltation than the title of co-redemptress. Her sorrows were not necessary for the redemption of the world, but in … Read more here
Month of Sorrows

Month of the Seven Sorrows of Mary

The month of September (Overview – Calendar) is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin Mary dates from the twelfth century, when it made its appearance in monastic circles under the influence of St. Anselm and St. Bernard. The Cistercians and then the Servites undertook to propagate it. It became widespread in the fourteenth and especially the fifteenth centuries, particularly in the Rhineland and Flanders, where Confraternities of the Sorrowful Mother sprang up. It was in this context that the first liturgical formularies in her honor were composed. A provincial council of Mainz in 1423 … Read more here

These weeks of lockdown are difficult for all of us, and we are particularly mindful of those whose jobs and lives are put on hold because of the pandemic. We want to be here for you during these difficult times. Even so, the Church in our Diocese of Portsmouth, its clergy, parishes and schools, is entirely dependent upon your generous charity. So that we can continue to provide the Liturgy of the Lord and our works, both centrally and from our parishes to the local community, I kindly ask all of the faithful who are able to do so, to continue their generous regular-giving to the Diocese and to their parish churches, which would otherwise lose vital income. You can donate via the button on the Parish website – or here
