A prayer for Ukraine, Russia and peace

O God,
it is your will to hold both heaven and earth
in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love
shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
and give peace to Ukraine,
peace among nations,
and peace in our hearts,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

My Dearest Parishioners, Visitors, Friends – Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Today’s Gospel reading begins a long section unique to Luke’s Gospel. Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem, which will end with his ministry in Jerusalem. We read that Jesus’ days for being “taken up” were fulfilled. The Greek word that Luke uses for “taken up” is the same word he uses to describe the Ascension. We also read that Jesus is determined to journey to Jerusalem. For Luke, Jesus ministry begins in Galilee and then is one long journey to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem he will meet his death but also enter into his glory. Only in Luke does Jesus then spend 40 days in Jerusalem instructing his disciples. It is in Jerusalem that his disciples wait after his Ascension to be sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. And it is from Jerusalem, in Luke’s second volume, the Acts of the Apostles, that the Good News is spread to Rome and the ends of the earth.

Immediately Jesus is met with rejection, as a Samaritan village will not receive him because he is going to Jerusalem. There was animosity between Samaritans who worshiped on Mount Gerazim and Jews who worshiped in Jerusalem. Jesus was also rejected as he began his ministry in Galilee in Chapter 4. And he will be rejected for the last time when he reaches Jerusalem. James and John want to call down fire from heaven to destroy the people in the village, but Jesus rebukes them and moves on. There is often the temptation to use violence to achieve right. Jesus has come to break this temptation. He is aware that he must undergo violence himself before he can enter his glory.

The rest of today’s reading is about the radical demands of discipleship. The three people who volunteer to become disciples on this journey show that they do not understand the demands Jesus will make of them. Neither care of self, care for the dead, nor care of one’s family (as required by the Fourth Commandment) can come before the demands of discipleship. Jesus reminds the first volunteer, who would go wherever Jesus goes, that animals in the wild have more security than do Jesus and his followers. The second, who wants to bury a parent, is reminded that the demands of proclaiming the Kingdom of God take precedence. And the third, who wants to say farewell to his family, is reminded that once you put your hand to the plow you cannot look back or the furrow will be crooked. Such a person is not ready for the Kingdom of God.

Jesus seems harsh here, but he is only asking of his disciples what he asks of himself. Jesus’ unconditional commitment to God’s saving work will demand of him his life. He knows this, but the disciples do not understand. Jesus does not want anyone to rush into discipleship, because the demands of discipleship require everyone considering it to be aware of the cost, make Jesus and his mission central to his life, and then go forward without looking back.

with Blessings Father Simon

REFLECTION:

Opening Prayer: Jesus, my heart thirsts for an encounter with you, but so often I want to meet you on my own turf, according to my own terms. Open my heart to allow myself to be challenged by your word to journey wherever you are leading, not setting the conditions myself, but allowing you to invite me deeper.

Encountering Christ:

Determined to Journey to Jerusalem: Through intimate prayer with his Father, Jesus came to a clear understanding of the Father’s will. Once he knew his Father’s will, there was not the slightest hesitation on his part. His resolute determination did not arise from a personal attraction to what lay ahead. He was in no way deceived as to the excruciating suffering that awaited him in Jerusalem. Yet, his determination was unfailing. In her writings, St. Teresa of Avila speaks of the importance of having a “determined determination” never to give up prayer. How “determinedly determined” are we to become a saint? How “determinedly determined” are we to fulfill God’s will in our life no matter what?

He Sent Messengers Ahead of Him: The Samaritans would not welcome Jesus because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. Their motives were based on cultural tensions of the times: Samaritans and Jews purely and simply did not mix. Yet, what these Samaritans did not realize was that they were turning away their Lord God and Savior for something as trivial as a centuries-old tradition of resentment and prejudice. How often for us, too, a multitude of reasons present themselves for turning away the Lord’s advances in our lives. Jesus’s steps were pointed in the direction of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem was the place of the cross. We easily find excuses to refuse Our Lord’s invitations because they bring us uncomfortably close to the cross. We forget that the “Jerusalem” Jesus invites us to can also be the source of the fullness of life for us.

Fire to Consume Them?: James and John, together with the rest of the apostles, had still not come to see things as God sees them. They failed to understand that God does not work in human hearts, or in the world at large, by force. The only force he uses is that of love. The Samaritans were not to be converted through a show of brute power. In fact, Jesus knew that the way to transform their hearts lay precisely in continuing down the road to their redemption, to the point of drinking the chalice that was his to drink. Let us join Our Lord on his path toward Jerusalem, and perhaps, instead of focusing on the attitudes of those around us, allow God to transform our hearts and teach us to love to the ultimate consequences, as he did.

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, you journeyed resolutely toward Jerusalem, knowing that your Passion and death awaited you there. Grant me a “determined determination” to embrace the invitation to follow you to its final consequences. Give me the strength to desire not only holiness, but also the path necessary to reach it. Help me to keep my eyes set on you no matter what.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will practice fortitude as the opportunity presents itself in my day.

Three people offer to follow Jesus. But Jesus tells them it will not be easy. To the first person, Jesus says that there will be nowhere comfortable to stay on their journey. He says that animals have their own houses – foxes have holes and birds have nests – but that he doesn’t have a nice house to live in. He must travel and isn’t sure where he will end up sleeping each night. How would you feel if you had to leave your home behind and you didn’t know where you’d be sleeping tonight? Another man ...

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 26-06-2022

Taking the Call: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In this week’s First Reading, Elijah’s disciple is allowed to kiss his parents goodbye before setting out to follow the prophet’s call. But we are called to follow a “greater than Elijah”, this week’s Liturgy wants us to know. In Baptism, we have put on the cloak of Christ, been called to the house of a new Father, and been given a new family in the kingdom of God. We have been called to leave behind our past lives and never look back—to follow wherever He leads. Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind and his disciple was given a double portion of his spirit (see 2 Kings 2:9–15). Jesus too, the Gospel reminds us, was “taken up” (see Acts 1:2, , ), and He gave us His Spirit to live by, to guide us in our journey in His kingdom ...

    Commentary on: 1 Kings 19:16b,19-21; Galatians 5:1,13-18; Luke 9:51-62

For some people, commitment and freedom seem quite incompatible. Yet today’s readings call for total commitment lived in total freedom. One cannot, in fact, have one without the other. Today’s Mass speaks of what it means to be fully a disciple of Jesus. This is much, much more than just being what is often understood as a “good Catholic”. Today’s passage opens with a very important moment in the life of Jesus. “As the time drew near for him to be taken up into heaven, Jesus resolutely took the road for Jerusalem.” These opening words of today’s Gospel indicate that we are moving into the second phase of Jesus’ public life and the second half of this gospel. For Luke, Jerusalem is the focal point of Jesus’ life. It is the centre from which Jesus’ great redemptive work unfolds. It is there that the disciples will form a new ...

Thoughts on Today's Gospel and Readings for the Week -26-06-2022

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week -26-06-2022

In our postmodern world, we are often tempted to see Jesus as one spiritual guru amongst many. However, Jesus makes it unambiguously clear that he is the one and only Son of God. As such, Jesus clarifies that all worldly goods find their value in relation to him. If we believe Jesus is who who he says he is, we must be willing to place our grudges, personal desires, and even our most sacred worldly obligations aside in order to walk truly and completely with him. Background on the Gospel Reading - Luke 9:51-62 Jesus resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem. Today's Gospel reading begins a long section unique to Luke's Gospel. Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem, which will end with his ministry in Jerusalem. We read that Jesus' days for being “taken up” were fulfilled. When you try to understand God’s forgiveness without getting into God’s word, all you’ve got is a reference. The forgiveness around you won’t add up. Why you should know the Church Fathers and how to do it.

Why you should know the Church Fathers and how to do it.

The Church frequently refers to the "Fathers of the Church." Who were these men, and what did they do to earn the title? The Fathers of the Church are so called because of their leadership in the early Church, especially in defending, expounding, and developing Catholic doctrines. For the first two centuries, most of these men were bishops, although in later years certain priests and deacons were also recognized as Fathers. The list includes such notables as: Clement of Rome (d. A.D. 97), Ignatius (d. 110), Polycarp (d. 155), Justin Martyr (the Church’s first major lay apologist; d. 165), Irenaeus (d. 202), Cyprian (d. 258), Athanasius (d. 373), Basil (d. 379), Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 386), Ambrose (d. 397), John Chrysostom (d ...

Father Mike Schmitz – How to Question Your Faith Well

The Catholic Church loves questions, but are we asking them for the right reasons? One of our Doctors of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas, is known for asking the hardest questions we have for our faith. His summa is a book full of them, and some of the greatest saints are the ones that asked the hardest questions. Having questions is not an obstacle, but your intentions can make or break your faith. Today, Father Mike explains how we can question our faith well. #AskAscension ...

Fr Mike Schmitz – Turn Your “No, But” into a “Yes, And”

When was the last time you said “yes” to God? In improv, there’s a practice where participants are encouraged to never respond with “no, but” and to instead offer a “yes, and…” This allows for not only growth in the scene but in the actors as well. Similarly, God is always offering us different “scenes” to get us to sainthood. How are we responding? Turning our “no, but” into a “yes, and” opens our life to Christ’s will, and is the quickest path to sanctification. Today, Fr. Mike explains how we can practice a better relationship with God by just ...

    Sacred Heart

History of Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Devotion to the Sacred Heart can be seen as early as the second century with St. Justin Martyr and in the 7th century with Pope Gregory the Great. Writers throughout these centuries emphasized the pierced side of Christ as the inexhaustible source from which all graces flow upon mankind and the blood and water as symbols of the sacraments of the Church. With the coming of St. Bernard of Clairvaux and St. Anselm in the 12th century, there was a sudden increase in direct reference to the love of the Sacred Heart for every person redeemed by His Passion and ...

The Popes on Devotion to the Sacred Heart

The feast of the Sacred Heart was approved for specified dioceses by Clement XIII in 1765, and extended to the whole Church by Pius IX in 1856. In 1889 Pope Leo XIII elevated it to the rank of first class, and through an encyclical letter in 1899 dedicated the whole Catholic world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Devotion to the Sacred Heart was also an essential component of Pope John Paul II's hopes for the "new evangelization" called for by the Church. "For evangelization today," he said, "the Heart of Christ must be recognized as the heart of the Church: ...

    Sacred Heart of Jesus June

    Scriptural Basis for the Devotion

Jesus, who is one with the Father (cf. John 10, 30), invites his disciples to live in close communion with him, to model their lives on him and on his teaching. He, in turn, reveals himself as "meek and humble of heart" (Matthew 11, 29). It can be said that, in a certain sense, devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a cultic form of the prophetic and evangelic gaze of all Christians on him who was pierced (cf. John 19, 37; Zac 12, 10), the gaze of all Christians on the side of Christ, transfixed by a lance, ...

The Sacred Heart and Our Spiritual Life

Devotion to the Sacred Heart is a wonderful historical expression of the Church's piety for Christ, her Spouse and Lord: it calls for a fundamental attitude of conversion and reparation, of love and gratitude, apostolic commitment and dedication to Christ and his saving work. Devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus are numerous. Some have been explicitly approved and frequently recommended by the Apostolic See. Among these, mention should be made of the following: Personal Consecration Personal consecration, described by Pius XI as "undoubtedly the principal devotional practice used in relation to the Sacred Heart" (Miserentissimus redemptor). Family Consecration Family consecration ...

June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a very, very old practice originally arising out of devotion to the Sacred wounds of Christ and all that His sacrifice for us embodied. It is a beautiful practice with which you can get closer to Jesus in contemplation of the Passion and His most perfect sacrifice. In 1899, the human race was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through Pope Leo XIII’s decree in his encyclical Annum Sacrum. Pope Pius X extended this by instituting this dedication be renewed yearly. The Feast Day for the Sacred Heart of Jesus falls ...
