Newsletter: 20th September 2020 – 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A

WE THANK GOD THAT WE ARE NOW ALLOWED TO CELEBRATE HOLY MASS IN OUR CHURCH

WELCOME BACK! To those who wish to return to Mass at a time when our Church is not crowded, it is recommended to come to the VIGIL MASS of SUNDAY – on Saturdays at 6.00PM or on SUNDAYS at 8.30AM when there is plenty of room in the body of the Church. Members of the congregation are well spaced out. Now that we have to wear masks, this is an additional precaution which prevents others being infected; however, some people have medical exemption. Sanitising hands on entry lessens the possibility of the virus being spread by touching surfaces.

There are signs on the floor indicating two metres so that we do not crowd up on one another.

TEST & TRACE: We will also take a contact number for all attendees. These details will be destroyed after 21 days according to data management regulations. Anyone is free to decline and still attend Mass but we encourage you to take part.

Please remember the advice is to wear a mask inside closed areas and churches.

My Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Jesus tells us to be gracious in what you receive . – Today’s Gospel is about Generosity to Others

‘Teach me, Lord to be generous in love, as you are to me and to all.’ Matthew 20:1-16

REFLECTION

The parable today is about the generosity of God, not an encouragement to idleness nor a way out of finding employment for our people, each of whom has the right to work. It is Jesus using an unusual example form life to highlight the unconditional love of God, stressing as he so often did, that God’s love depends on God, not on our good works. Is Jesus pointing the way to the first truth of our faith: that God is good in love to all? From believing that in the heart, we are empowered to love others like him, or try to. It is only human to object to this approach. We very often repay love with love, and withdraw love when it is not given. Pope Francis writes: “There are two aspects of love. First, love is more about giving than receiving. Second, love is more about deeds than words. Love is always given or transmitted to another, he said, and “love always gives life, fosters growth.” Feast of the Sacred Heart 2016). The joy of God is in giving love; this is a prime meaning of the parable. He calls on us to enjoy his giving of love to everyone, even the ones we do not think deserve it. Teach me, Lord to be generous in love, as you are to me and to all.

Introductory Prayer: Lord, you are the author of life and the giver of all that is good. You are the Prince of Peace and my mainstay. You are my healer and the cure itself. I need you, and I need to give you. I love you and commit myself to you entirely, knowing you could never let me down or deceive me. Thank you for giving me your very self.

Petition: Lord Jesus, help me to work in your vineyard alongside you.

1. The Call to Work in the Vineyard: The landowner needs workers for his vineyard. Going out to the marketplace, where there are all kinds of people, he invites all the workers he can find. We are all invited to be apostles in the Lord’s vineyard. Some might think they don’t have enough talent, others that they are just too young to be able to do anything for Christ, and still others that the task is just too much for them. But Christ doesn’t ask for excuses; he asks for workers, generosity and good will. He will take care of the rest. He doesn’t call the prepared; he prepares the called. He is the one who produces the fruits, not us. What a joy and privilege to be called by the Lord to be a worker in his vineyard, especially when we fulfill our task out of love.

2. Turning the Tables: We complain so easily about the problems we see around us: the lack of values, the violence, the evil people do…. Then in our prayer we say to God, “Look at the world. Why don’t you do something about it?” If we were to listen a little more closely to God in prayer, we would probably hear him reply, “Why are you standing here idle all day?” Perhaps we never knew there was something we could do. Perhaps we never had the courage to face the situation and address the matter seriously. Idleness is the one thing the Lord cannot understand. “You also go into the vineyard.” Some are called early; some are called later. It doesn’t matter when, what does matter is to respond the moment we are called.

3. The Surprising Salary: Go ahead and ask the question…. Peter did, in the passage just prior to this parable (Matthew 19:27-30): What can I expect from this? Christ is the best bargain in the marketplace. He promises us the full wage, even if we were called at the last hour. Whatever we “sacrifice” for him, he promises us 100% in this life plus eternal life. So really, the sky is the limit. We have to ask ourselves: What am I willing to give Christ? A few meager dollars, a few fleeting moments of my day, only my “leftover” time? Christ never obliges; he only invites. It is important never to forget that by helping God to save souls we save our own. This is the way to build up a treasure in heaven.

Conversation with Christ: Lord, today I hear your call more clearly than ever. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work in your vineyard. For you I am willing to do anything. I know there will be moments of difficulty and weakness. Give me your grace and strength, and then ask of me what you please. Make me your apostle.

Resolution: I will give as much of today as possible to God by living each moment and activity with intensity and purity of intention. I will offer it all to God out of love.

with Blessings and prayerful best wishes, Father Marcin Drabik

God the Holy Spirit works in & through the Sacraments

The Sacraments are the Work of God, in fact, they are God at work. Jesus established the Sacraments, he gave them to us, it is His Passion, Death and Resurrection that makes them effective, but it is God the Holy Spirit who applies them to us. We need the Sacraments if we are going to make it into heaven. We cannot do it alone. We have heard Jesus tell …

Fr. Mike Schmitz Answers –  I BELIEVE…

Q: Do you believe everything that the Catholic Church teaches?

A: Of course I do. I wouldn’t be Catholic if I didn’t! I mean that seriously; if I didn’t believe in the valid teaching authority of the Catholic Church, then I would have to go somewhere else. That just seems to make sense to me. No one “has to be” Catholic. It is a decision. And that decision is based off of the intellectual conclusion that it is true …

PASTORAL LETTER FROM THE BISHOP to all Baptised Catholics in the Diocese of Portsmouth on 13th September 2020, the Twenty-Fourth Sunday of the Year

Fr. Mike Schmitz on the Fear of Coronavirus

Fr. Mike Schmitz addresses the fear that is very much around at the moment because of the coronavirus pandemic. “Wearing masks, not wearing masks” he says, “and all the mixed emotions that have come with the coronavirus reveal that—as a society—we lack freedom from the fear of death. Maybe you know someone who has died from the virus, or someone who lost their livelihood due to the lockdown. Many are wondering when they can safely go out again, or when …

Young Catholic who greeted Benedict XVI in Britain becomes a priest

Paschal Uche woke up early on the morning of Sept. 18, 2010, a day that would change his life. He needed to set off in good time in order to pass through security at the event he was attending in central London. The 21-year-old hopped on the Tube near his home in Stratford, East London, and headed towards Westminster. On the way there, he began to see more and more young people heading in the same direction: towards a …

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week – 20-09-2020

In Matthew 20, Jesus presents the bizarre parable of the workers in the vineyard, where the owner pays the same amount to those who worked for only about an hour in his vineyard as he does to those who worked all day long in the heat of the day. What is the point and purpose of the parable of the workers in the vineyard? What is Jesus getting at. Check out this video with Dr. Brant Pitre to learn more about this parable of the workers in the vineyard. Background on the Gospel Reading In today’s Gospel, Jesus moves from Galilee to teach in Judea where he is sought out by great crowds and tested by the Pharisees on issues such as marriage and divorce. Jesus also encounters a rich young man who is unable to accept Jesus’ demand that he leave his possessions to follow him. Jesus’ response to …

Children – Read today’s Holy Readings here again 20-09-2020

Catholic Kids Media – The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard! Ordinary Time 25A Dear Children, Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 20:1-16,  is based on the Parable of the Workers – Jesus says Why be envious because I am generous? That’s Not Fair!!! Children, How many of you do chores? Oh, a lot of groans. Aren’t they a little better if you get paid for them? Did you know that the minimum wage in Portsmouth is 8.25 an hour? How would you like to get paid that for your chores? Well for the next three minutes, I want to hire one of you. But I’m not going to pay you minimum wage, I am going to pay you £10 an hour. How does that sound? Let’s see. I need the calculator on my phone. £10/hour divided by 60 minutes in an hour is 16 pence a minute. So that’s .48 pence …

Commentary on Isaiah 55:6-9; Philippians 1:20-24.27; Matthew 20:1-16

Commentary on Isaiah 55:6-9; Philippians 1:20-24.27; Matthew 20:1-16

THIS STORY first of all needs to be understood against the background of the early Christians. Those who have worked long hours in the vineyard, “who have done a heavy day’s work in all the heat”, are the Jewish people. The late arrivals, those who have come at the 11th hour are the new Christians, many of them Gentiles of “pagan” origin. Perhaps today’s Gospel – addressed mainly to Jewish Christians – reflects some resentment on their part at the newcomers enjoying all the benefits with no tradition or life of observance behind them. One of the sad themes of Matthew’s Gospel is that Jesus, himself an Israelite, first reached out to his own people but they rejected him. He then turned to the Gentiles who accepted him and showed very clearly that the Spirit of Jesus had come down upon them in abundance. Truly it could be said that …

Dr. Scott Hahn - Gospel Reflections 20-09-2020

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 20-09-2020

First and Last: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time The house of Israel is the vine of God, who planted and watered it, preparing the Israelites to bear fruits of righteousness (see Isaiah 5:7; 27:2–5). Israel failed to yield good fruits and the Lord allowed His vineyard, Israel’s kingdom, to be overrun by conquerors (see Psalm 80:9–20). But God promised that one day He would replant His vineyard and its shoots would blossom to the ends of the earth (see Amos 9:15; Hosea 14:5–10). This is the biblical backdrop to Jesus’ parable of salvation history in today’s Gospel. The landowner is God. The vineyard is the kingdom. The workers hired at dawn are the Israelites, to whom He first offered His covenant. Those hired later in the day are the Gentiles, the non-Israelites, who, until the coming of Christ, were strangers to the covenants of promise (see Ephesians 2:11–13). In the Lord’s …

Father John P. Cush - 5 More Reasons to Read and Love the Fathers of the Church

Father John P. Cush – 5 More Reasons to Read and Love the Fathers of the Church

Why I love the Fathers of the Church — and why you should too. By Father John P. Cush Previously, I have offered some reasons why we, as those in the Church who want to know our faith better, should get to know the lives and the writings of the Fathers of the Church. I presented the first five reasons in this article, and now I offer you five other reasons why we should love the great writers of the Apostolic and Post-Apostolic age. 6. The Fathers teach us to be fearless. These pastors, these shepherds of souls were truly, utterly, entirely …

Philip Kosloski - Reading good spiritual books is essential to a joyful life

Philip Kosloski – Reading good spiritual books is essential to a joyful life

Whether it is the Bible or the lives of the saints, reading positive spiritual books is vital to holiness. One of the most important parts of leading a joy-filled life is forming our hearts and minds with positive literature. A single good book can provide the key to holiness that illuminates the path that we must walk. Fr. Francis Xavier Lasance comments on this topic in his My Prayer Book, and explains how books can form a soul for good or ill. The inspiration of a single book has made teachers, preachers, philosophers, authors, and statesmen. The first good book …

Phillip Douglas- Our Passports to Paradise Are the Poor

I wish I had eyes and faith like my children do. Being back in America for a few months they are now pointing out every single poor and homeless person at every intersection we pass by.  “Awe daddy, we missed him because the light was green, but maybe we can stop and help him on the way back . . . ” Children have the most beautiful hearts. Sometimes it’s like my children want to chase after the poor and find them all and give them everything they need. It’s really a beautiful quality to witness in children. Oftentimes my …

Bishop Philip update on Covid - The Rule of 6

Bishop Philip update on Covid – The Rule of 6

How are our churches affected by the recent government guidance on the ‘rule of six’? From Monday 14 September, we are not allowed to meet socially with people from other households in groups of more than 6. This applies indoors and outdoors, including in private homes and gardens. The change is meant to simplify and clarify the rules on social gatherings, to make them easier to understand and easier for the police to enforce. Our churches meanwhile are COVID-19 secure venues, and so can host larger numbers and operate as before. Weddings and funerals are still be able to proceed …

Dear parents We are invited to return to Mass We are aware that some people are still apprehensive about returning to Mass. Some families returned to Mass on Saturday/Sunday. They would have seen that there is a high degree of organisation in place to ensure safe distancing and personal safety. We are much safer in church than in any supermarket. Come during the week at 10am to check it out!! Before Mass every day there is exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00am. At 9:30am there is the Divine Mercy Chaplet with reading from St Sr Faustina followed by Benediction before …

Important Notice – Timetable for First Communion Children

Dear parents You will have received a letter from Fr Marcin regarding the arrangements for First Confession and First Communion. Because COVID 19 has confronted us with unexpected issues, Fr Marcin has taken into account the reality that some families already feel safe enough to come to church for Mass each week . Therefore he decided that he should arrange Holy Communion in two or maybe three separate cohorts starting with this group whose parents already feel safe enough. This chart shows the timetable for this first group: The other children are not forgotten but we will need to wait …

Pope Francis Prayer Intentions September 2020 – Respect for the Planet’s Resources

Respect for the Planet’s Resources We pray that the planet’s resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner. We are squeezing out the planet’s goods. Squeezing them out, as if the earth were an orange. Countries and businesses from the global north have enriched themselves by exploiting the natural resources of the south, creating an “ecological debt.” Who is going to pay this debt? In addition, this “ecological debt” is increased when multinationals do abroad what they would never be allowed to do in their own countries. It’s outrageous. Today, not tomorrow; today, we have … Read more here

“CAN-DO CHRISTIANS” A MESSAGE FROM FATHER MARCIN

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Dear Friends: I would like to share with You some things which are about our Parish and for our Parish.  I’m absolutely sure, that You have noticed how many things already happen in our Parish to help in our spiritual grow to love God more and more in His Word to us, in His Sacraments for us (which is His real presence among us). Parish Devotions this month

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Seven Graces of Mary

The Blessed Virgin Mary grants seven graces to the souls who honour her daily by saying seven Hail Mary’s and meditating on her tears and dolors (sorrows). The devotion was passed on by St. Bridget. HERE ARE THE SEVEN GRACES:

  1. I will grant peace to their families.
  2. They will be enlightened about the divine mysteries.
  3. I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them in their work.
  4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.
  5. … Read more here

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Angelic Salutation (Hail Mary) Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. The Seven Sorrows are:

  1. The prophecy of Simeon
  2. The flight into Egypt
  3. The loss of the Holy Child at Jerusalem for three days
  4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary
  5. Standing at the foot of the Cross
  6. Jesus being taken from the Cross
  7. The burial of Christ.

Fr. Faber on the Seven Sorrows

Fr. Faber on the Seven Sorrows

God vouchsafed to select the very things about Him which are most incommunicable, and in a most mysteriously real way communicate them to her. See how He had already mixed her up with the eternal designs of creation, making her almost a partial cause and partial model of it. Our Lady’s co-operation in the redemption of the world gives us a fresh view of her magnificence. Neither the Immaculate Conception nor the Assumption will give us a higher idea of Mary’s exaltation than the title of co-redemptress. Her sorrows were not necessary for the redemption of the world, but in … Read more here
Month of Sorrows

Month of the Seven Sorrows of Mary

The month of September (Overview – Calendar) is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin Mary dates from the twelfth century, when it made its appearance in monastic circles under the influence of St. Anselm and St. Bernard. The Cistercians and then the Servites undertook to propagate it. It became widespread in the fourteenth and especially the fifteenth centuries, particularly in the Rhineland and Flanders, where Confraternities of the Sorrowful Mother sprang up. It was in this context that the first liturgical formularies in her honor were composed. A provincial council of Mainz in 1423 … Read more here

These weeks of lockdown are difficult for all of us, and we are particularly mindful of those whose jobs and lives are put on hold because of the pandemic. We want to be here for you during these difficult times. Even so, the Church in our Diocese of Portsmouth, its clergy, parishes and schools, is entirely dependent upon your generous charity. So that we can continue to provide the Liturgy of the Lord and our works, both centrally and from our parishes to the local community, I kindly ask all of the faithful who are able to do so, to continue their generous regular-giving to the Diocese and to their parish churches, which would otherwise lose vital income. You can donate via the button on the Parish website – or here
