My Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters in Christ

What will you do for Lent? This Lent is going to be very different! We may even think that the past 12 months have been one, continuous Lent! However, Lent is about our personal relationship with God in Prayer and in His Sacraments. We need to use the next six weeks to grow closer to God.

    How will you do that?…

The very best way to begin Lent, obviously is to attend Mass on Ash Wednesday. Then, why not chose another weekday to attend Mass to? If work or other commitments make it impossible for you to attend Mass, who not, at least, set aside 20 mins each day to listen to the Readings and the Homily from Mass during the Day (available on the Facebook Page).

How about getting back into the habit of regular and frequent confession? At our Parish we can go to confession every day, if a settled time is not convenient for You, please just ask Father Marcin and he will be happy to help.

    REFLECTION

Introductory Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for letting me begin this week contemplating your infinite mercy and love for me. I need your healing touch to become the saint you created me to be. I know you want to heal me because you gave me the gift of my faith: to know and love you and experience the intense joy of following you.

Petition: Lord, I want to be made clean. Touch my heart and heal me with your merciful love.

    1. In Need of Healing: Like the leper in this Gospel, I, too, am in need of healing. He came humbly, as a beggar, for he had no way of repaying Jesus for such a great act of kindness. But his humility was founded on faith. Confident in the scriptural passage, “Do not reject a suppliant in distress, or turn your face away from the poor” (Sirach 4:4), he insisted reverently. He did not doubt that Jesus could cure him, that Jesus would take an interest in an insignificant and anonymous leper. He was asking Our Lord for a miracle, and he knew Jesus would grant it. He also knew that he did not deserve or merit such a gesture of mercy. Even if Jesus refused his plea, he was ready to accept it.

    2. Moved with Pity: Jesus was moved with pity. He stretched out his hand to touch the leper, revealing God the Father’s will in a tender way: “I do will it. Be made clean.” Jesus was moved more by the leper’s humble faith than by his leprosy. The leper’s plea struck at the very core of the mission of the Redeemer. Jesus desires nothing more than to remove sin and its effect in us. Jesus “came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15) and said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). The gesture of charity towards the leper foreshadows Christ’s redemptive death for all mankind. Jesus wants to reach out to touch our heart and heal us, too. We believe this to be true. All we need to do is let him, approaching him with humility and exercising our faith.

    3. Changed Forever: The encounter with Jesus changed the leper’s life forever. Rather than an encounter with love, it was an encounter of love. Every encounter requires someone’s initiative. Although the leper is the one to approach Jesus, is it not Jesus who first makes himself accessible? In the same way, Jesus had initiated the encounter with his first disciples when he walked along the shores of Lake Tiberius, allowing Andrew and John to ask, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (John 1:38). Lord Jesus, you enter into my life because you want to show me the way to everlasting life with you. Is it not you, kind and gentle Lord, who invites me: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28)?

Conversation with Christ: Lord Jesus, you are so merciful to me! Thank you for loving me so much. How anxiously you wait to fill me with your love, to heal me from the leprosy of my sins. Help me to be open to your embrace of healing love, confident that each time I kneel before you to beg your forgiveness, you will be moved with pity to touch me and make me clean.

Resolution: Today, I will imitate God’s merciful love in my own life with everyone with whom I enter into contact: family, fellow employees, friends.

with Blessings and prayerful best wishes, Father Marcin Drabik

Or on Venmo: @catholickidsmedia Contact us at: catholickidsmedia@gmail.com Gospel: Mark 1:40-45 Jesus cures a person with leprosy, who reports his cure to everyone. Children, Jesus is there for all of us regardless of what illnesses we have…. The leper doesn’t reckon: “I’ve tried others for a cure; now I’ll try Jesus”. No, for this leper there is no question: his faith in Jesus’ power is absolute. And he doesn’t even seem to think: “I’ll hold it against you if you don’t help me” – he seems ready to go on accepting his lot; so his faith is deep enough to leave Jesus in perfect freedom: to say to Jesus, “If you choose” – and to mean it. No wonder – when …

Thoughts on Today's Gospel and Readings for the Week - 14-02-2021

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week – 14-02-2021

In this video, Fr. Mike of Ascension Presents encourages us to go to God in our weakest moments. As God answered St. Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Using the life of St. Catherine of Siena as an example, Fr. Mike shows how—when we let God into our brokenness—he can do wonders. Background on the Gospel Reading – Mark 1:40-45 Jesus cures a person with leprosy, who reports his cure to everyone. In today’s Gospel, we continue to hear Mark report the miraculous healings that Jesus performed in Galilee. The Gospel begins with Jesus healing a man with leprosy. Leprosy is a disfiguring, infectious skin disease that has been surrounded by many social and religious taboos throughout history. In 1873, the cause of leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, was identified. We now know that leprosy is caused …

Dr. Scott Hahn - Gospel Reflections 14-02-2021

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 14-02-2021

Made Clean: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Old Testament, leprosy is depicted as punishment for disobedience of God’s commands (see Numbers 12:12–15; 2 Kings 5:27; 15:5). Considered “unclean”—unfit to worship or live with the Israelites, lepers are considered “stillborn,” the living dead (see Numbers 12:12). Indeed, the requirements imposed on lepers in today’s First Reading—rent garments, shaven head, covered beard—are signs of death, penance, and mourning (see Leviticus 10:6; Ezekiel 24:17). So there’s more to the story in today’s Gospel than a miraculous healing. When Elisha, invoking God’s name, healed the leper, Naaman, it proved there was a prophet in Israel (see 2 Kings 5:8). Today’s healing reveals Jesus as far more than a great prophet—He is God visiting His people (see Luke 7:16). Only God can cure leprosy and cleanse from sin (see 2 Kings 5:7), and only God has the power to bring about what He wills (see Isaiah 55:11; Wisdom 12:18) …

    Commentary on Leviticus 13:1-2,45-46; 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1; Mark 1:40-45

LEPERS WERE AMONG THE MOST PITEOUS of people in ancient (and in even not-so-ancient) times. Although little was known then of the origin of the sickness, it was clearly known to be contagious and therefore greatly feared. The only solution was to isolate the victim and not allow him/her to approach other people. Apart from the appalling physical disintegration of body and limbs, there was the social ostracism, the contempt and the fear which the victim engendered. The real pain and suffering were here. It seems the disease itself was, for the most part, not particularly painful. What was probably even more tragic was that many who were branded as lepers were suffering from some other ailment, which may not have been contagious at all – such as ulcers, cancer, eczema or other skin diseases (some of them perhaps purely psychosomatic). Permanent exile The signs for diagnosis are given in …

The Significance of Ash Wednesday – Father Mike Schmitz

    Lentern Journey

Fr Robert McTeigue – Lent is a dress rehearsal

Let’s make sure we’ve gotten past the Sunday school concept of how to live this season. “Daddy, I used to think that I would be in my 20s forever, but then I turned 27 …” That’s part of a conversation I overheard recently. I too, was once a 20-something, and unconsciously assumed that being in one’s 20s was “standard”; then the first gray hair showed up… I think of these things as the season of Lent begins. There are so many ways of marking Lent badly—ways that are harmful. And there are some very good ways of living Lent well—ways that …

Philip Kosloski - Lent is the perfect time to fast from sin

Philip Kosloski – Lent is the perfect time to fast from sin

Fasting from food during Lent should also include fasting from sinful behaviours. Lent is a beautiful season in the Church to recommit our lives to God. While the Church has certain days dedicated to fasting and abstinence from food during Lent, this discipline should not neglect the spiritual aspect of our lives. Fasting in a bodily way is supposed to remind and strengthen us to “fast” from our own sinful behaviours.  The author of the 19th-century book The Lenten Manual and Companion for Holy Week explains how fasting is a means to an end, and that end is the elimination of sin …

Ash Wednesday 2021: Vatican offers guidance on ash distribution amid COVID-19 pandemic

Ash Wednesday 2021: Vatican offers guidance on ash distribution amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Vatican gave guidance Tuesday about how priests can distribute ashes on Ash Wednesday amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments published a note Jan. 12, directing priests to say the formula for distributing the ashes once to everyone present, rather than to each person. The priest “addresses all those present and only once says the formula as it appears in the Roman Missal, applying it to all in general: ‘Repent, and believe in the Gospel,’ or ‘Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,’” the note said. It …

Bishop Philip Message - The Sacrament of Confirmation May 23rd 2021

Bishop Philip Message – The Sacrament of Confirmation May 23rd 2021

One of the great joys in recent years have been the weekend gatherings in the Cathedral during Eastertide for the Sacrament of Confirmation, with youngsters from across the Pastoral Areas and parishes of the Diocese. Unfortunately, this year the COVID-situation makes it look unlikely we’ll be able to gather for the time being for large-scale liturgies. So I have been consulting the clergy about how best this year to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. Taking their advice into account, I have decided that for this year only, to delegate all parish priests from across the Diocese to confer this Sacrament …

The Three Pillars of Lent - Almsgiving, Prayer, and Fasting:

The Three Pillars of Lent – Almsgiving, Prayer, and Fasting:

Giving alms, Jesus teaches, means making the needs of others our own, especially the needy of our world. They are all around us: children and the old, the sick and the suffering, families and individuals, next-door neighbours and people in lands faraway. Whatever we give should be something of ourselves, something that costs us. We will receive blessings from God in return. What shall we give to the needy this lent? In deciding, decide generously. After all, before us is the great alms Jesus gave: “He loved us, and gave himself up for us.” Pope Francis said in his Ash …

Lent – Why Do We Practice Fasting and Abstinence?

In this video, Fr. Mike explains how prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three pillars of a spiritually fruitful Lent. He then challenges us to try new ways to exercise these Lenten practices, sharing several simple strategies for drawing closer to God during this holy season. Background: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full …

    Parish Devotions this month

    Holy Family

The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family

The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family. The special devotion which proposes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the model of virtue of all Christian households began in the 17th century. It started almost simultaneously in Canada and France: the Association of the Holy Family was founded in Montreal in 1663, and by the Daughters of the Holy Family in Paris in 1674. This devotion soon spread and in 1893  Pope Leo XIII expressed his approval of a feast under this title and himself composed part of the Office. On account of the flight …

    Imitation of the Holy Family

The Holy Family models for us what family life should exemplify. It is a school of virtue for both parents and children. There we find God, and learn how to connect with God and with others. The family is where love is freely given without self-interest. It is where we learn to love, to pray and to practice the gift of charity. Pope John Paul II has said, “The family, more than any other human reality, is the place in which the person is loved for himself and in which he learns to live the sincere gift of self” (Nov …

The Hidden Life of the Holy Family

The home of Nazareth is the school where we begin to understand the life of Jesus—the school of the Gospel. First, then, a lesson of silence. May esteem for silence, that admirable and indispensable condition of mind, revive in us…A lesson on family life. May Nazareth teach us what family life is, its communion of love, its austere and simple beauty, and its sacred and inviolable character…A lesson of work. Nazareth, home of the Carpenter’s Son, in you I would choose to understand and proclaim the severe and redeeming law of human work. — Paul VI at Nazareth, January 5, …

Blog Topic- Pope Jean Paul II – Veritatis splendor – The Splendor of Truth

Veritatis Splendor, one of the major encyclicals written by Pope John Paul II, addresses the question of moral truth from a Christian perspective. In response to new controversies, John Paul proposes to answer certain fundamental questions regarding the moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Issued in August 1993, “Veritatis Splendor” …

These weeks of lockdown are difficult for all of us, and we are particularly mindful of those whose jobs and lives are put on hold because of the pandemic. We want to be here for you during these difficult times. Even so, the Church in our Diocese of Portsmouth, its clergy, parishes and schools, is entirely dependent upon your generous charity. So that we can continue to provide the Liturgy of the Lord and our works, both centrally and from our parishes to the local community, I kindly ask all of the faithful who are able to do so, to continue their generous regular-giving to the Diocese and to their parish churches, which would otherwise lose vital income. “CAN-DO CHRISTIANS” A MESSAGE FROM FATHER MARCIN

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Dear Friends: I would like to share with You some things which are about our Parish and for our Parish.  I’m absolutely sure, that You have noticed how many things already happen in our Parish to help in our spiritual grow to love God more and more in His Word to us, in His Sacraments for us (which is His real presence among us). We also go out to meet those who still searching for God, or who were not so lucky to have personal contact with Jesus Christ.

    Updated Coronavirus Safety Guidelines

Track and trace: code. Please use the QR Code (on the back of the church). Simply hold your camera app over the code and follow the instructions. This would be helpful should a local outbreak of the virus be detected.
Ventilation:In order for us to comply with regulations and therefore be considered a ‘COVID secure environment’ the doors must be left open. As the temperature drops in the weeks ahead it will be important to wrap-up warm for Mass! Please do bear this in mind.

WELCOME BACK! To those who wish to return to Mass at a time when our Church is not crowded, it is recommended to come to the VIGIL MASS of SUNDAY – on Saturdays at 6.00PM or on SUNDAYS at 8.30AM when there is plenty of room in the body of the Church. Members of the congregation are well spaced out. Now that we have to wear masks, this is an additional precaution which prevents others being infected; however, some people have medical exemption. Sanitising hands on entry lessens the possibility of the virus being spread by touching surfaces.

There are signs on the floor indicating two metres so that we do not crowd up on one another.

TEST & TRACE: We will also take a contact number for all attendees. These details will be destroyed after 21 days according to data management regulations. Anyone is free to decline and still attend Mass but we encourage you to take part.

The Diocese has updated its Coronavirus guidance in the light of the latest Government instructions issued on 14th September 2020. There is a little more flexibility in some areas than previously, for example, in ministry to the sick and housebound, although great care must still be taken. The use of halls and the possibility of reinstating some group meetings are covered. There is limited scope for general socialising because the ‘Rule of 6’ has been imposed. Our churches are very COVID-safe, provided everyone is following the proper safety procedures. Our thanks as ever to clergy and parishioners who are working hard at this. One area, however, that remains a challenge is having sufficient volunteers (e.g. stewards and cleaners) to assist. If you are hale and hearty, please do offer to help– your assistance will enable many more people to return to Mass, thereby bringing them closer to Jesus Christ through His Church. Let us all pray for a speedy end to the pandemic.

Please remember the advice is to wear a mask inside closed areas and churches.
