My Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters in Christ

The Gospel is from St. Matthew 18:15-20. Unfortunately, there are far too many Christians today who pay no heed to the serious obligation of encouraging an erring brother to give up his sinful ways. They shrug it off by saying : “I have more than enough to do to keep myself from sin” or “am I my brother’s keeper”? The answer is in this lesson we have just read. We are our brothers’ keepers, and even if we have many temptations and inclinations to sin we shall not overcome them if we have no time to think of our neighbors’ need.

There are, alas, millions of lapsed or luke-warm Christians who could and would have been active members of Christ’s mystical body if their neighbours had fulfilled this grave obligation which Christ has imposed on us all. They are now a source of scandal to the weaker and youthful members of the Church, and an impediment to the possible acceptance of the faith by non-Christians. Would the Reformation, which has caused whole countries of the western world to lose almost all faith in Christ and indeed in God, have had such disastrous effects, if those who remained within the Church had put this law of fraternal charity into practice? However, it is no use crying over spilt milk! Let us see our present-day obligations and what we are doing to help our neighbors retain their Christian faith and practice. How much of the indifference to religion which the youth of today seems to be showing is due to lack of parental control and example? How many children of Christian families grow up as practical pagans because their Christian faith meant little or nothing to their parents? It is in the home that the religion of the next generation is firmly established or lost. When parents are loyal to their faith in their daily lives, their children will, as a rule, be loyal to it too; where parents are careless and lax their children will be still more careless and more lax.

Parents! the first neighbours and fellow Christians whom you must kindly and charitably correct are your own children. Their future salvation and your own too will depend on how well you fulfill this obligation. Parents who are obedient to Christ in this will find time and many opportunities to have a charitable word of help for an erring neighbor outside their household. On the other hand, the lax parents, who give little or no thought to getting to heaven or to their children getting there in God’s good time, will hardly bother with their neighbor’s salvation. Thus this cancer of infidelity and irreligion grows and spreads.

Let each one of us look into his past conduct in relation to this law of charity. Have we really tried to help our fellowmen on the road to heaven? Have we given them the good example of a truly Christian way of living? Have we offered advice and encouragement when it was needed, and correction in private where that was possible? If so “we have gained our brother.” We have brought a prodigal son back to a loving Father and that loving Father will repay us a hundred-fold in this life and especially in the next.

Excerpted from The Sunday Readings by Fr. Kevin O’Sullivan, O.F.M.

with Blessings and prayerful best wishes, Father Marcin Drabik

Unity in Christ

Opening Prayer: My Lord, I believe you are more interested in being with me right now than I can grasp. You never cease watching out over me. How happy I imagine you are that I am turning my attention to you in prayer today. Help me to put aside any concern or distraction,  trusting that you will take care of whatever preoccupies my heart. I offer this time to you, because you first thought of me and deserve all my love and praise. How I need your grace to be open to allow your love to grow in me and work through me in touching the lives of all those I meet today.

Encountering Christ:

  1. Christ Builds His Church: Jesus was instructing the Twelve to prepare them to lead his church. Jesus knew full well those he called and how he wanted his church to be organized. Jesus shared his spirit with the Twelve, establishing the community of believers upon the foundation of the Apostles. How extraordinary that he shared with them the power in his name to bind or loose here on earth as in heaven. As Jesus’s time of earthly lordship was ending, he expressly transferred his authority to those he had chosen. The church was the desired and willed invention of Christ to continue exercising his lordship. Let us ask for a more vibrant and robust faith to trust in his power and grace still at work through the mystical body of the church. It is a good reflection to ask myself, “What efforts I make to reconcile others to God and with the church.”
  2. Called to Love One Another: Jesus is gentle, merciful, and compassionate when he tells us, as members of his body the church, that we are responsible for one another. He clearly explains that one aspect of loving each other is building up and correcting our brothers and sisters when they err. This is never an easy task, for it implies the risk of rejection or misunderstanding. Fraternal correction must always be inspired by real charity as a spiritual work of mercy. We are to want the best for each other by holding each other accountable, not by judging. Christ is appealing to us as his beloved to have the same selfless and caring attitude as he has for each soul. He asks us to go after wandering sheep, to do everything possible to bring them back to the safety of the fold. Where might the Lord be inviting me to carry out a true act of love by instructing a loved one or friend in the truth?
  3. Christ Is with Us: Christ likes to be with us. But he loves even more that we gather in his name especially as a spiritual family in faith around the table of the Eucharist. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). When we are joined together in prayer, he joins us and assures us that the Father is most pleased and will favor us. Jesus is with us, attentively accompanying us and deeply caring about every encounter, every decision, every challenge, every triumph I face today. Even as I come alone before the Lord in prayer, I am united with others who are at prayer at this same moment. Thank you Jesus for surrounding me with your love through my parish community and the universal church!

Conversing with Christ: Lord, it makes me sad to see that there is division and disunity within my family, my parish community, and the world around me. Yet, how much more your heart must ache and suffer for your beloved children! How and in what way do you need me to be an instrument of unity and reconciliation? Have I made you happy with how I love others and build up your kingdom? Where can I still grow to reach out and invite others to return to you? You know how much I want to follow you and live in your friendship. I want to love others with a courageous and selfless heart. Touch my heart with the fire of your love to be your apostle of peace and unity.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will pray for the conversion of sinners and unity within the church. Concretely, I will do my part to recall the relationships in my life that need reconciliation and the gift of your forgiveness. For anyone I have caused hurt or harm I will pray for your mercy, and where you ask me I will reach out and seek their forgiveness.

For Further Reflection: Watch the Conference from The Father of Mercies: A Retreat Guide the parable of the prodigal son by Father John Bartunek, LC. As always, this Retreat Guide is available in audio, video, and textual formats.

Thomas Griffin – 4 Lessons from Christ on the Eucharist

The Bread of Life Discourse (John 6:22-71) is the single greatest teaching regarding the Eucharist that we have from the lips of Jesus himself. As in every passage in the Bible, the context of the passage is crucial. Directly prior to Jesus’ teaching on the Eucharist we have two of the most famous miracles of Christ that are recorded in the Gospels: the multiplication of the loaves (John 6:1-15) and the walking on water (John 6:16-21). Without the details of …

Fr. Mike Schmitz Answers – STRUGGLING TO BELIEVE IS NOT THE SAME THING AS DOUBTING

Q: In your last column, you said you believe everything the Church teaches. What if I struggle with believing? Where does that put me?

A: We are sometimes under the impression that believing or having faith means that we simply accept a teaching or the situations of our lives with no questions. If that is the case, then I need to clarify what I mean by having faith. It certainly does mean assenting to all of the truths of …

Bishop Barron: The Book of Exodus and why coming back to Mass matters

Exodus doesn’t give any indication that the moral prescriptions are somehow more important than the liturgical prescriptions. In connection with an academic project of mine, I’ve recently been poring over the book of Exodus and numerous commentaries thereupon. The second most famous book of the Old Testament is concerned primarily with the manner in which God shapes his people so that they might become a radiant beacon, a city set on a hill. On the biblical reading, Israel is …

Blessed Claudio Granzotto’s Story (August 23, 1900 – August 15, 1947)

Born in Santa Lucia del Piave near Venice, Claudio was the youngest of nine children and was accustomed to hard work in the fields. At the age of 9, he lost his father. Six years later, he was drafted into the Italian army, where he served more than three years. His artistic abilities, especially in sculpture, led to studies at Venice’s Academy of Fine Arts, which awarded him …

Children – Read today’s Holy Readings here again 06-09-2020

Catholic Kids Homilies – “ Is Judging Wrong? ” A fun Catholic homily for kids based on the readings for the 23rd  Sunday of Ordinary Time, cycle A Dear Children, in Sunday’s Gospel: Matthew 18:15-20 If your brother listens to you, you have won back your brother Jesus wants his disciples to know that they don’t have to store up their hurt feelings until they go “Pop!” and then stop being friends. This is why Jesus is telling them to talk to each other when one of them has been hurt because that’s how they can stay gathered together – even if difficult things happened to them or between them. Staying friends is a good reason to practice what Jesus is teaching to his disciples in today’s story, but there is another, important reason why Jesus wants the disciples to stay together. At the end of today’s story, Jesus says that wherever two …

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 06-09-2020

To Win Them Back: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time As Ezekiel is appointed watchman over the house of Israel in today’s first Reading, so Jesus in the Gospel today establishes His disciples as guardians of the new Israel of God, the Church (see Galatians 6:16). He also puts in place procedures for dealing with sin and breaches of the faith, building on rules of discipline prescribed by Moses for Israel (see Leviticus 19:17–20; Deuteronomy 19:13). The heads of the new Israel, however, receive extraordinary powers—similar to those given to Peter (see Matthew 16:19). They have the power to bind and loose, to forgive sins and to reconcile sinners in His name (see John 20:21–23). But the powers He gives the Apostles and their successors depends on their communion with Him. As Ezekiel is only to teach what he hears God saying, the disciples are to gather in His name and …

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week – 06-09-2020

Father Mike Schmitz: “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” | SLS18 What is one of the most significant obstacles to sharing the Gospel? Is it the fear of being wrong? Is it the fear of getting into an argument? Is it the fear of looking stupid? While those are often realities in the life of the hopeful evangelist, Fr. Mike argues that the most significant obstacle to sharing the Gospel is the fact that one is not merely called to share the Gospel, but to share their very life, too. The fear of being transparent, the fear of being generous and the fear of integrity all play a part here. After all, it takes authenticity to have authentic friendships. And this is one of the great deficiencies of our time. To learn more about FOCUS visit: https://www.focus.org/ Background on the Gospel Reading Today’s Gospel reading is taken from a chapter of …

Commentary on Ezekiel 33:7-9; Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 18:15-20

Commentary on Ezekiel 33:7-9; Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 18:15-20

WE ARE REMINDED TODAY that to belong to the Church is to belong to a community of brothers and sisters in Christ. This means that being a Christian is not a private, purely personal affair, although that is the way some people seem to behave. When God asked Cain, “Where is your brother?”, Cain answered, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The teaching of the Gospel is that indeed I am responsible for my brothers and sisters. Not only that, our relationship with Jesus, with God, depends intimately on how we relate with other people – be they members of our own family or complete strangers. “By this will all know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35) and “As often as you did/did not do it to the very least of my brothers and sisters, you did/did not do it to me” (Matthew …

Why the Father gave us the Church: because we longed for it

Why the Father gave us the Church: because we longed for it

The challenge of our day is to reveal what the Church really is. People love classical music and football, Homer and Dante, Shakespeare and Indy car racing, because they are alive. Even, they spark life. We recognize in the passionate exploits of athletics, art and literature, an interior reality suddenly expressed and made present before us. I could never tire of reading and teaching the great poets because they continue to speak to us. From the past these great works speak to us, transforming our present. But for those who get lost in the ephemeral concepts of these works of art, …

There are more Christian martyrs now than in all the previous centuries

There are more Christian martyrs now than in all the previous centuries

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the pope’s representative to France, affirms the trend is not diminishing. “Today’s martyrs stimulate the work of the Church on different fronts,” says Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the pope’s representative to France. And because there are more martyrs now than in all the previous centuries, they are a “pressing call” to both Church and State — to work for religious freedom, but also unity among Christians and friendship among all religions. The archbishop offered these reflections in a meditation published by the Diocese of La Rochelle et Saintes on August 25. The diplomat was the guest of honor …

Allison DeBoer – The End of the World: What Does the Church Teach?

In Acts 1, we are told of these miraculous truths of Christ: “After His suffering, He presented Himself to [his disciples] with many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.” And after those forty days were complete, Jesus stood in the midst of his disciples. The Ascension “So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?‘ He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed …

UPDATE ON FIRST HOLY COMMUNION 2020 Programme

We plan to complete this year’s First Holy Communion Children before the end of this year. The plan is to work with smaller groups. Please check the 2 posts below for more information and the relevant timetables for the 1st Group. Father Marcin would have sent letters to our parents outlining the plan and relevant timetable. – Brian and Linda

First Holy Communion

Video Course for Our First Communion Children returning to Mass

Dear parents We are invited to return to Mass We are aware that some people are still apprehensive about returning to Mass. Some families returned to Mass on Saturday/Sunday. They would have seen that there is a high degree of organisation in place to ensure safe distancing and personal safety. We are much safer in church than in any supermarket. Come during the week at 10am to check it out!! Before Mass every day there is exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00am. At 9:30am there is the Divine Mercy Chaplet with reading from St Sr Faustina followed by Benediction before …

Important Notice – Timetable for First Communion Children

Dear parents You will have received a letter from Fr Marcin regarding the arrangements for First Confession and First Communion. Because COVID 19 has confronted us with unexpected issues, Fr Marcin has taken into account the reality that some families already feel safe enough to come to church for Mass each week . Therefore he decided that he should arrange Holy Communion in two or maybe three separate cohorts starting with this group whose parents already feel safe enough. This chart shows the timetable for this first group: The other children are not forgotten but we will need to wait …

Pope Francis Prayer Intentions September 2020 – Respect for the Planet’s Resources

Respect for the Planet’s Resources We pray that the planet’s resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner. We are squeezing out the planet’s goods. Squeezing them out, as if the earth were an orange. Countries and businesses from the global north have enriched themselves by exploiting the natural resources of the south, creating an “ecological debt.” Who is going to pay this debt? In addition, this “ecological debt” is increased when multinationals do abroad what they would never be allowed to do in their own countries. It’s outrageous. Today, not tomorrow; today, we have … Read more here

“CAN-DO CHRISTIANS” A MESSAGE FROM FATHER MARCIN

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Dear Friends: I would like to share with You some things which are about our Parish and for our Parish.  I’m absolutely sure, that You have noticed how many things already happen in our Parish to help in our spiritual grow to love God more and more in His Word to us, in His Sacraments for us (which is His real presence among us). We also go out to meet those who still searching for God, or who were not so lucky to have personal contact with Jesus Christ.

Parish Devotions this month

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Seven Graces of Mary

The Blessed Virgin Mary grants seven graces to the souls who honour her daily by saying seven Hail Mary’s and meditating on her tears and dolors (sorrows). The devotion was passed on by St. Bridget. HERE ARE THE SEVEN GRACES:

  1. I will grant peace to their families.
  2. They will be enlightened about the divine mysteries.
  3. I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them in their work.
  4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my divine Son or the sanctification of their souls.
  5. … Read more here

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Seven Sorrows of Mary

The Angelic Salutation (Hail Mary) Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. The Seven Sorrows are:

  1. The prophecy of Simeon
  2. The flight into Egypt
  3. The loss of the Holy Child at Jerusalem for three days
  4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary
  5. Standing at the foot of the Cross
  6. Jesus being taken from the Cross
  7. The burial of Christ.

Fr. Faber on the Seven Sorrows

Fr. Faber on the Seven Sorrows

God vouchsafed to select the very things about Him which are most incommunicable, and in a most mysteriously real way communicate them to her. See how He had already mixed her up with the eternal designs of creation, making her almost a partial cause and partial model of it. Our Lady’s co-operation in the redemption of the world gives us a fresh view of her magnificence. Neither the Immaculate Conception nor the Assumption will give us a higher idea of Mary’s exaltation than the title of co-redemptress. Her sorrows were not necessary for the redemption of the world, but in … Read more here
Month of Sorrows

Month of the Seven Sorrows of Mary

The month of September (Overview – Calendar) is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin Mary dates from the twelfth century, when it made its appearance in monastic circles under the influence of St. Anselm and St. Bernard. The Cistercians and then the Servites undertook to propagate it. It became widespread in the fourteenth and especially the fifteenth centuries, particularly in the Rhineland and Flanders, where Confraternities of the Sorrowful Mother sprang up. It was in this context that the first liturgical formularies in her honor were composed. A provincial council of Mainz in 1423 … Read more here

Pope Francis Message – 4th World Day of the Poor 2020

14/11/2020

These weeks of lockdown are difficult for all of us, and we are particularly mindful of those whose jobs and lives are put on hold because of the pandemic. We want to be here for you during these difficult times. Even so, the Church in our Diocese of Portsmouth, its clergy, parishes and schools, is entirely dependent upon your generous charity. So that we can continue to provide the Liturgy of the Lord and our works, both centrally and from our parishes to the local community, I kindly ask all of the faithful who are able to do so, to continue their generous regular-giving to the Diocese and to their parish churches, which would otherwise lose vital income. You can donate via the button on the Parish website – or here
