My Dear Friends, Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Jesus tells us “Everyone has a value in the eyes of God”  – Today’s Gospel is to look again & see the value the rejected stone.

‘I thank you, Lord, for the wonder of my being..’ Matthew 21:33-43

REFLECTION

A common image for Jesus is the garden or the vineyard, with comments on wasteland and fruitful land. In this story he looks at stones and points out that a rejected stone, if looked at again, could become the cornerstone of a building. He is referring to prophets who were rejected, and to himself. He would be through his weakness and death, the essential stone of the new temple, the energy through death of the new community.

We live in a throwaway culture. Much of what could be used again is dumped to destroy the earth and the sea. We waste a lot of the daily bread of the people. Jesus asks us always to look again, to see the value of what we may throw aside, especially in our treatment of each other.

Everyone has a value in the eyes of God. Pope Francis noted: ‘When adolescents feel unloved, they may turn to violence, hatred or delinquent behaviour. There is no such thing as bad children or evil adolescents, he said, but there are unhappy people.’ (June 2017). He is asserting that with love and a community of acceptance, everyone has a place and has something to offer, like every stone is valuable to a new building, especially some we may first throw away.

I thank you, Lord, for the wonder of my being.

Introductory Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are the master of the universe and yet you wish to listen to me and guide me. You know all things past, present and future, and yet you respect my freedom to choose you. Holy Trinity, you are completely happy and fulfilled on your own, and yet you have generously brought us into existence. You are our fulfillment. Thank you for the gift of yourself. I offer the littleness of myself in return, knowing you are pleased with what I have to give.

Petition: Lord, grant me a deeper humility that seeks you and not myself in all that I do.

1. The Stone Rejected: Just a few days before, a great crowd had acclaimed Jesus as the Messiah as he triumphantly entered Jerusalem. However, the chief priests, scribes, Pharisees and Herodians see Jesus as a threat to their own position of leadership. Though they have not yet let it be known to the people, they have decided to reject Jesus and are already plotting together to kill him. In the meantime, they are pretending to be making a “thorough investigation,” to find the “truth” about what the crowds have acclaimed – that Jesus is the Messiah. What they are really doing is trying to ruin him, to catch him in some mistake, so as to denounce him as a fraud before the crowds. They seek to break the people’s support for him. They practice the kind of toxic politics we are so familiar with today: Instead of seeking the common good or the truth, they only seek themselves and their own glory.

2. The Cornerstone: Jesus sees what his detractors are trying to do. He tells them a series of parables, hinting that if they continue to oppose him, they will lose. In the parable of the vineyard he tells them that they can kill him; but even so they will still lose. Then he quotes Psalm 118, comparing himself with the rejected stone that becomes the cornerstone. What Jesus is hinting at goes beyond just the quoted verses. The whole psalm – which Jesus’ enemies would have known from memory – tells of Yahweh fighting for his faithful one. The faithful one will not be abandoned to death, and the enemies of Yahweh will be defeated. It is as if Jesus throws down a challenge: “You cannot beat me. Even if you kill me as you are planning to do, my Heavenly Father will not abandon me to death. He will fight for me and I will become the cornerstone. You would do better to join me.”

3. Jesus Is True Progress: Jesus won. He continues to win today. His enemies still insist on smashing themselves to bits. When we survey history, we see what becomes of one group after another that oppose Jesus and his Church. They disappear into oblivion. Jesus is the future of the whole world. He won. He continues to win and will win in the end. Since Jesus is the future of the whole world, progress can only mean progress toward him, toward the civilization of justice and love he wishes to establish. Those who seek their own special interests are seeking a return to the past, to the Dark Age before Jesus. They seek to return to when humanity tried not just to know what was good and evil (eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil), but to DECIDE it – to be gods themselves.

Conversation with Christ: Lord, help me to be humble. Help me to accept you as Messiah and Savior – and as my future. So many times, instead of seeking you, I seek myself. I try to influence everything so that what is good and true is defined according to my will rather than yours. Please be patient with me and help me to change.

Resolution: In what area of my life is it hardest for me to accept the way God has organized things? Where do I most want to set up a system opposed to God’s plan in order to get my way? My resolution today has to be one that helps tear down this “structure of sin” in my life.

with Blessings and prayerful best wishes, Father Marcin Drabik

Updated Coronavirus Safety Guidelines

WELCOME BACK! To those who wish to return to Mass at a time when our Church is not crowded, it is recommended to come to the VIGIL MASS of SUNDAY – on Saturdays at 6.00PM or on SUNDAYS at 8.30AM when there is plenty of room in the body of the Church. Members of the congregation are well spaced out. Now that we have to wear masks, this is an additional precaution which prevents others being infected; however, some people have medical exemption. Sanitising hands on entry lessens the possibility of the virus being spread by touching surfaces.

There are signs on the floor indicating two metres so that we do not crowd up on one another.

TEST & TRACE: We will also take a contact number for all attendees. These details will be destroyed after 21 days according to data management regulations. Anyone is free to decline and still attend Mass but we encourage you to take part.

The Diocese has updated its Coronavirus guidance in the light of the latest Government instructions issued on 14th September 2020. There is a little more flexibility in some areas than previously, for example, in ministry to the sick and housebound, although great care must still be taken. The use of halls and the possibility of reinstating some group meetings are covered. There is limited scope for general socialising because the ‘Rule of 6’ has been imposed. Our churches are very COVID-safe, provided everyone is following the proper safety procedures. Our thanks as ever to clergy and parishioners who are working hard at this. One area, however, that remains a challenge is having sufficient volunteers (e.g. stewards and cleaners) to assist. If you are hale and hearty, please do offer to help– your assistance will enable many more people to return to Mass, thereby bringing them closer to Jesus Christ through His Church. Let us all pray for a speedy end to the pandemic.

Please remember the advice is to wear a mask inside closed areas and churches.

Fr. Mike Schmitz – Which Is Better? The Rosary vs. The Chaplet

“What if I don’t have time to pray both The Rosary and The Divine Mercy Chaplet?”

Deciding how to spend your time in prayer can be difficult, especially when you’re deciding between two powerhouse prayers like The Rosary and The Chaplet. Let’s look at each of them. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy was gifted to Saint Faustina during a vision of Jesus. In this vision, he listed 14 promises to those who pray the chaplet. In the …

Saint for Today Sunday 4th Oct 2020 – Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi’s Story (September 26, 1182 – October 3, 1226)

Saint Francis is one of the world’s most popular and beloved saints. He is the patron of animals, merchants and ecology. Francis of Assisi was a poor little man who astounded and inspired the Church by taking the gospel literally—not in a narrow fundamentalist sense, but by actually following all that Jesus said and did, joyfully, without limit, and without a sense of self-importance. Serious illness brought the young …

Thoughts on Today's Gospel and Readings for the Week - 04-10-2020

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week – 04-10-2020

One of Jesus’ final parables in Matthew, prior to his execution and as the mounting opposition against him is rising, is his famous parable of the wicked tenants. What is the underlying assumption Jesus expects his audience to know in this parable of the wicked tenants, such as a house owner, a vineyard, tenants, and servants of a master? What is the point of the parable of the wicked tenants that Jesus gives in this parable given in the Temple in Jerusalem? Discover the deeper meaning of Jesus’ words in the parable of the wicked tenants and how it would have been understood by his immediate audience. Check out this video with Dr. Brant Pitre to learn more about this parable of the wicked tenants. Background on the Gospel Reading Today’s Gospel follows directly after last Sunday’s Gospel in which Jesus was questioned by Jewish religious leaders about the source of his …

Children – Read today’s Holy Readings here again 04-10-2020

Catholic Kids Homilies – Bad Tenants and Wild Grapes – Ordinary Time 27A Dear Children, Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 21:33-43 is based on the Parable of the bad tenants – Jesus explains that “We have God’s forgiveness through His Son..” Last of All, He Sent His Son Young people at this age are sensitive about acceptance and rejection. Few of us take correction well. Children, in particular, can be less than gracious when corrected by others. Today’s Gospel presents us with an opportunity to consider how we respond to God’s word as it is sent through his messengers. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable that illustrates how we often reject God’s giving himself to us. Scripture “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way …

The tenants in the Vineyard

Commentary on Isaiah 5:1-7; Philippians 4:6-9; Matthew 21:33-43

TODAY’S PARABLE is linked to last Sunday’s about the two sons sent to work in their father’s vineyard. One promised to go and work there but he did not actually go. The other at first refused but later relented and went. The message of Jesus is clear (especially in the context of Matthew’s Gospel). God’s people had disappointed their God. It was the formerly sinful Gentiles who took on the task of building the Kingdom. This should not be understood as anti-Jewish. On the contrary this was being written by Christian Jews for Christian Jews and it must have been a painful thing for them to see and accept. Poor tenants Today we have a parable saying more or less the same thing. Strictly speaking it is not a parable but an allegory. A parable normally presents one lesson and the details are not relevant; while, in an allegory, each …

Dr. Scott Hahn - Gospel Reflections 04-10-2020

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 04-10-2020

Living on the Vine: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s Gospel Jesus returns to the Old Testament symbol of the vineyard to teach about Israel, the Church, and the kingdom of God. And the symbolism of today’s First Reading and Psalm is readily understood. God is the owner and the house of Israel is the vineyard. A cherished vine, Israel was plucked from Egypt and transplanted in a fertile land specially spaded and prepared by God, hedged about by the city walls of Jerusalem, watched over by the towering Temple. But the vineyard produced no good grapes for the wine, a symbol for the holy lives God wanted for His people. So God allowed His vineyard to be overrun by foreign invaders, as Isaiah foresees in the First Reading. Jesus picks up the story where Isaiah leaves off, even using Isaiah’s words to describe …

Philip Kosloski - John Paul II declared only one Doctor of the Church

Philip Kosloski – John Paul II declared only one Doctor of the Church

During his 26-year pontificate, St. Therese of Lisieux was the only saint whom John Paul II elevated to one of the highest honors of the Church. In addition to canonizing various men and women, declaring them saints, popes have also labeled specific saints as Doctors of the Church. This custom started in the 13th century, when popes began singling out specific saints who were exemplary teachers in various theological or spiritual topics. These holy men and women were given the official title of Doctor, which stems from the Latin root word docere, meaning “to teach.”Since the 13th century, only 36 saints have been given this …

Fr. Mike Schmitz Answers –  PRO-CHOICE CATHOLIC?

Fr. Mike Schmitz Answers –  PRO-CHOICE CATHOLIC?

Q: I recently read an article where a person described themselves as being a “pro-choice Catholic”. How can that be? A: That is a big question. First, I never intend this column to be a bludgeon with which we (or I) attack any unsuspecting individual of group of individuals. It is meant to provide some teaching and then some “why’s” behind those teachings. It rarely does anyone any good to just say “that’s that” and walk away. We need to know the reasons behind what we claim to believe. So, please know that my goal is not to shout anyone …

Come during the week at 10am to check it out!! Before Mass every day there is exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00am. At 9:30am there is the Divine Mercy Chaplet with reading from St Sr Faustina followed by Benediction before …

Important Notice – Timetable for First Communion Children

Dear parents You will have received a letter from Fr Marcin regarding the arrangements for First Confession and First Communion. Because COVID 19 has confronted us with unexpected issues, Fr Marcin has taken into account the reality that some families already feel safe enough to come to church for Mass each week . Therefore he decided that he should arrange Holy Communion in two or maybe three separate cohorts starting with this group whose parents already feel safe enough. This chart shows the timetable for this first group: The other children are not forgotten but we will need to wait …

October Month of the Holy Rosary

OCTOBER: The Most Holy Rosary

October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which is celebrated each year, commemorates the great navy victory of the Christians over the Turks in 1571. At that battle, the Battle of Lepanto, sixty-five thousand men prayed the Rosary for three hours and took part in the Sacraments and Traditional Devotions. And, the Christian army prevailed that day against the Turks, although they were outnumbered by a 3:1 ratio. Following the colossal victory of the Christians, the Turks never fully recovered and never again threatened the Mediterranean Sea. Pope Pius V established the … Read more here
The Rosary is the weapon for these times Padre Pio

Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina – “The Rosary is a Weapon”

Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina – “The Rosary is a Weapon” How true! With the Rosary, we can fight the powers of Satan, which foster sin, hatred, and war. The Rosary is the weapon of the Church in proclaiming unity and peace. All mankind is called to be part of the One, Universal Faith, and we are called to pray together. The Rosary has been called the second greatest prayer, second only to the Holy Mass. “The Rosary is the scourge of the devil,” wrote Pope Adrian V. … Read more here
MARY IN OUR LIFE Fr. William Most

Mary in our Life by Fr. William G. Most

Mary in our Life by Fr. William G. Most “Today, when dangers far greater than those of the ancient Turks threaten not only Christianity but all civilisation, we are urged by our Blessed Mother to turn again to the Rosary for help. If men in sufficient numbers do this, and at the same time carry out the other conditions that she has laid down, we have the greater reason for confidence that we will be delivered from our dangers.” —  We are all called to be children of the One True God. And, the disappointing thing in our world is that … Read more here
Our Lady of Fatima Pray for Us

Our Blessed Lady at Fatima – “I am the Lady of the Rosary”

Our Blessed Lady at Fatima – “I am the Lady of the Rosary” On May 13, 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima and continued to appear on the 13th of each month until October of 1917. On the first day the children saw “a lady, clothed in white, brighter than the sun, radiating a light more clear and intense than a crystal cup filled with sparkling water, lit by burning sunlight.” Mary’s request was clear, “I have come to ask you to come here for six months on the 13th day of the month, at … Read more here

Our Lady of Fatima – The Miracle of the Sun

The Blessed Mother appeared to three small-town children in Portugal in 1917, calling on the world to repent and say the Rosary. On October 13, 1917, Mary appeared again to the three children at Fatima and said, “I want to tell you that a chapel is to be built here in my honour. I am the Lady of the Rosary. Continue always to pray the Rosary every day. The war is going to end, and the soldiers will soon return to their homes.” By then there were thousands of witnesses. Mary also said, “Do not offend the Lord our God any more, … Read more here
15 Promises of reciting the Holy Rosary

The Fifteen Promise of Our Lady of the Rosary

Thus, I implore all of you to pray the Rosary as Our Lady, Mother Mary, asked of us. Please make it part of your daily prayers. Remember and truly contemplate the 15 promises of Mary to those that pray the Rosary:

  1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the rosary, shall receive signal graces.
  2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the rosary.
  3. The rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.
  4. It will cause virtue and good works to … Read more here

The Rosary and the Liturgical Year

The Rosary and the Liturgical Year The Rosary had its origin in the liturgical mentality of former ages. Even at the present time it is called “Mary’s Psalter.” There still are Catholics who consider the 150 Hail Marys a substitute for the 150 psalms for those persons who neither have the time, the education, nor the opportunity to pray the Hours of the Divine Office. Thus “Mary’s Psalter” is a shortened, simplified “breviary” — alongside the common Hour-prayer of the Church. — The Church’s Year of Grace, Dr. Pius Parsch The Rosary is Christocentric setting forth the entire life of Jesus … Read more here

The Rosary and the Popes

The Rosary and the Popes No form of extra-liturgical devotion to Mary is more widely practiced among the faithful or found by them to be more satisfyingly complete than the Rosary, which has come to be regarded as the very badge of Catholic piety. No form of extra-liturgical devotion to Mary has been recommended more warmly or frequently by the Popes. With perhaps two exceptions, all the Sovereign Pontiffs from Sixtus IV in 1478 down to John XXIII, especially Leo XIII (in 23 documents, ten of them encyclicals entirely on the Rosary) and his successors, have extolled this form of … Read more here

The Mysteries of the Rosary

The Mysteries of the Rosary Until about the 15th century hundreds of mysteries were part of the Rosary devotion then the 15 mysteries that we know today were definitively fixed as “the Mysteries of the Rosary.” Pope John Paul II, in his encyclical, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, in 2002 added the five Luminous Mysteries. Through the meditations of the complete Rosary one recalls and has impressed on his mind, the Popes tell us, “the chief mysteries of the Christian religion,” “the mysteries of our Redemption,” “the great mysteries of Jesus and His Mother united in joys, sorrows, and triumphs.” The twenty mysteries are … Read more here
Saint Dominic Guzman and the Holy Rosary

Saint Dominic Guzman and the Holy Rosary

Saint Dominic Guzman and the Holy Rosary The Rosary is attributed to Saint Dominic Guzman in the 1200’s. Saint Dominic Guzman was an Augustian priest and worked for clerical reform. By age 26, Saint Dominic Guzman was fighting the Albigensian Heresy, which taught that there are two Gods, marriage is a sin, and denied the Trinity, incarnation and redemption. While many others had failed to stop the spread of the heresy, Saint Dominic Guzman succeeded. In 1208, Saint Dominic Guzman knelt in the little chapel of Notre Dame de La Prouille and asked Mary, the Mother of God, to save … Read more here

These weeks of lockdown are difficult for all of us, and we are particularly mindful of those whose jobs and lives are put on hold because of the pandemic. We want to be here for you during these difficult times. Even so, the Church in our Diocese of Portsmouth, its clergy, parishes and schools, is entirely dependent upon your generous charity. So that we can continue to provide the Liturgy of the Lord and our works, both centrally and from our parishes to the local community, I kindly ask all of the faithful who are able to do so, to continue their generous regular-giving to the Diocese and to their parish churches, which would otherwise lose vital income. You can donate via the button on the Parish website – or here
