Sin no More

A prayer for Ukraine, Russia and peace

O God,
it is your will to hold both heaven and earth
in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love
shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
and give peace to Ukraine,
peace among nations,
and peace in our hearts,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

My Dearest Parishioners, Visitors, Friends – Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Today, we see Jesus “writing on the ground with his finger” (John 8:6), just like He was busy and, at the same time, absent minded in some more important chore than having to listen to those accusing that woman brought to him because “she has been caught in the act of adultery” (John 8:3).

We must pay attention to Jesus Christ’s peace of mind and sense of humour, even in moments that for others may be of great stress. In our present days, that slip away at breakneck speed, twisting and compressing our nerves on great many occasions, this is a practical lesson for each one of us. The silent and funny escape of the accusers, reminds us that God is the only one who can judge us and that we are all sinners. In our daily life, in our work, in our family or friendly relations, we often make value judgements. More than once, our judgement is wrong and harms others’ good fame; which is a true lack of justice that forces us to retraction. And this is not always so easy. Upon contemplating Jesus amidst that “filthy mess” of accusers, we may very well understand what saint Thomas Aquinas pointed out: “In every work of God both justice and mercy are united and they support each other. Justice without mercy is cruelty; and mercy without justice is ruin, destruction”.

Let us fill us with joy knowing for sure God forgives us everything, absolutely everything we ever did, are doing, or will do, through repentance in the sacrament of confession. In these Lenten days, in the sacrament of reconciliation, we have the splendid opportunity to go to whom is rich in mercy. And, in addition, a concrete resolve for today: when I shall look at the others, I shall say deep in my heart the same words Jesus said: “Neither do I condemn you” (John 8:11).

The Pharisees were happy to pass judgement on the sins of others without recognising their own sinfulness. Let us be merciful before we judge others knowing our own weaknesses.

with Blessings Father Simon

REFLECTION:

Opening Prayer: Lord, as I pray my way through this Lenten season, please give me the grace to live my resolutions well, and help me, as I reflect on these words, to draw light and inspiration from them for my day.

Encountering Christ:

What Authority? The Pharisees exercised their authority over others by merciless recrimination. Christ reached out to others with compassion and mercy. The Pharisees saw authority as a means to banish a sinner from society. Christ seeks the lost and returns him or her to the sheepfold. In this Gospel, the adulterous woman was about to be stoned for her sin, but Jesus put a stop to the Pharisees’ hypocrisy and, with a warning to sin no more, sent the woman off to begin anew. He perfectly exemplified authority, compassion, and mercy. We are called to imitate him in our dealings with others.

Twice Abused: This woman had been used by a man for his own purposes. And now that she had been caught, the Pharisees were also using her to entrap Jesus and find a reason to condemn him. As she lay in the dust at the feet of Our Lord, were her mind, heart, and soul hopeless? Had she resigned herself to a slow death by stoning? Did she feel that she deserved it? Any interior darkness was likely banished when Jesus addressed her: “Woman.” An encounter with Christ, the light of the world, never fails to uplift and transform even hardened sinners.

Christ Forgives: Christ looked at this woman with infinite love and tenderness. He looked into her heart and forgave her. He returned this woman’s freedom and dignity to her with the invitation to sin no more. He does the same for us with each reception of the sacrament of reconciliation. How blessed we are to have access to the transformative power of the sacraments.

Conversing with Christ: Lord, I see that you are willing to forgive much, and I too want that same forgiveness. Forgive me my trespasses and help me to forgive those who trespass against me with the same compassion and mercy you exemplified in this Gospel.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will make an effort to forgive a person against whom I hold a grudge.

For Further Reflection: Prayer for the Forgiveness of Sins

O Lord, Jesus Christ, Redeemer and Savior, forgive my sins, just as you forgave Peter’s denial and those who crucified you. Count not my transgressions, but, rather, my tears of repentance. Remember not my iniquities, but, more especially, my sorrow for the offenses I have committed against you. I long to be true to your word, and pray that you will love me and come to make your dwelling place within me. I promise to give you praise and glory in love and in service all the days of my life.

Why is Lent 46 days and not 40? Because each Sunday is considered a Feast Day as we celebrate the death and Resurrection of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. The Gospel on the 40 days that Jesus spends in the wilderness reveals to us that when we fast and pray to draw ourselves closer to Christ, the evil one will always try to tempt us away. But like Jesus we can always use our Faith to defend ourselves against temptation.

Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross

Opening Prayer ACT OF CONTRITION O my God, my Redeemer, behold me here at Thy feet. From the bottom of my heart I am sorry for all my sins, because by them I have offended Thee, Who art infinitely good. I will die rather than offend thee again. Stations of the Cross - First Station: Jesus is condemned to death Leader: We adore Thee, O Christ, and bless Thee. All: Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world. After meditation: I love You, Jesus, my love above all things; I repent with my whole heart of having offended You. Never allow me to separate myself from You again. Grant that I may love You always, and then do with me what You will. On the way to the next station: At the cross her station keeping, Stood the mournful Mother weeping, Close to Jesus to the last. Bishop Philip writes... Lent is Coming

Bishop Philip writes… Lent is Coming

Bishop Philip writes... Lent is nigh! Some new resources are coming – plus an appeal for your prayers. On Wednesday 2nd March, we begin the great season of Lent - a wonderful time of 40 days when we prepare ourselves for the celebration of Easter and the Passover of the Lord from death to life. It is a time of healing when we ask God to renew within us His love. We seek by God’s grace to cast off the old ways and to take on the new, that is, to die with Christ - and to rise again with Him to new life. Lent is not simply about ‘giving things up’ or ‘doing something extra.’ St. Leo reminds us there are three saving works: (1) self-denial, fasting and mortification; (2) prayer and devotion, study and reflection; and (3) charitable outreach or almsgiving. Although these works are good in themselves, ... Read more here

The Purpose of Lent – Fr. Mike Schmitz

In this video, Fr. Mike explains how prayer, fasting, and alms-giving are the three pillars of a spiritually fruitful Lent. He then challenges us to try new ways to exercise these Lenten practices, sharing several simple strategies for drawing closer to God during this holy season. What’s the real connection between the Israelites’ forty years in the desert and the forty days of Lent? Sure, they both involve the number forty—which often represents a time of test and trial in the Bible—but what’s the more important connection? The Israelites’ time in the desert and our forty-day Lenten fast represent God’s invitation for us to trust him completely. Fr. Mike explains, the Israelites did not believe the Lord could bring them into the Promised Land because it was inhabited by a people much more powerful and larger than Israel—they didn’t trust him even after he delivered them from slavery to the ... Fr Robert McTeigue – Lenten Journey – Why does God care about ‘little’ sins?

Lent is a time to recognize our need for a savior, and embrace our own Purgatory. How would you respond to the following? Your God—the one you say is busying managing every molecule, every galaxy at every nanosecond from the beginning of time—THAT God has an interest in what I do behind closed doors? With someone I love? Give me a break! I was watching a debate between an atheist and a defender of God; I insisted that were I present I would have instructed the atheist that the words “Give me a break!” (which he and his supporters treated as a “mic drop” moment) do not constitute an argument; but that’s another topic for another time. Nonetheless, the atheist (whom I suspect isn’t really an atheist but simply a bad theologian because he is an even worse philosopher) does raise an interesting question: “Why does God care so much ... Fr Robert McTeigue – Lenten Journey – Commandments, sin, and Lent: Let’s ask the right questions

Commandments, sin, and Lent: Let’s ask the right questions - There's wisdom underneath the facts. “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning” (Mark Twain). Likewise, the difference between the almost right question and the right question is really a large matter. ‘tis the difference between finding data and finding wisdom. So how does this pertain to Lent? In Lent, we talk about sin. To understand sin, we have to understand the Ten Commandments. And to understand the Ten Commandments, we have ask the right question, not the almost right question. The almost right question about the commandments is: “Are they commandments or suggestions?” That’s a pretty good question to ask, especially nowadays, when it seems that nearly every moral principle or imperative can be recast as a suggestion, a request, or a ... Fr. Dave Mercer – A priest’s advice – Got “Catholic guilt”? It might actually be grace

If feeling guilty is the reason you’re NOT going to Confession: A priest’s advice "I already feel guilty enough about what I did. I don’t need a priest to make me feel more guilty." Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are three spiritual practices we encourage during Lent. As part of those practices, we also encourage making a good confession. And yet, rather oddly, some people see feeling guilty as an obstacle to this sacrament. If you already feel guilty about something you have said or done, that means you recognize it as wrong. And, that’s not bad. Folks who couldn’t care less if they hurt someone are the worrisome ones. They have the bigger problem. But, back to you. The priest isn’t there to make you feel more guilty, but to help you move through your sense of guilt to being freed to live the life that God wants you to live ... Read more here

Fr Robert McTeigue – Lenten Journey – The ultimate “why” question

Lent is a great time to find the meaning and the measure of our creation. Here’s one of the most important questions you’ll ever be asked: “Why bother?” Another way of approaching the question: “Why am I here? What am I for? Does it matter if I succeed for fail?” These are always important questions to ask and answer repeatedly, but especially during the season of Lent. With the Church, I do believe that we’re made for something quite specific and that it does matter greatly whether we succeed or fail. We are made for success, and God is doing everything he can to help us so we succeed. But sometimes—and, here’s the hard part—most of us, at least some of the time, choose to fail. Maybe I can make that bitter pill easier to swallow by suggesting that Lent can help to free us from the ugly things that ... Read more here
Pray the Stations with St. Joseph

Pray the Stations with St. Joseph

St. Joseph wasn't at Calvary, but these Stations turn to his intercession as we walk beside his Son. Pope Francis has gifted the Church the Year of St. Joseph. Maybe your Lenten focus has been to grow in a deeper appreciation for him, as universal patron of the Church and father of the Christ child. After all, his feast on March 19 falls during the season of Lent.  Perhaps, like so many, you are undertaking Fr. Calloway’s Consecration to St. Joseph or taking up some sort of devotion to St. Joseph.  What about experiencing the Stations of the Cross with St. Joseph? Maybe that seems out of place. Joseph was not at Calvary. He did not experience the Passion alongside Jesus. Yet, I believe we can parallel the life of the Holy Family to that of the Stations of the Cross and ask the intercession of St. Joseph in this traditional Lenten devotion.  Connections can ... Philip Kosloski - How giving up something for Lent can benefit the poor

Philip Kosloski – How giving up something for Lent can benefit the poor

If you don't eat desserts during Lent, give the excess money to the poor. During Lent the Church encourages us to fast, pray and practice almsgiving. One way we can fulfill our commitment to almsgiving is by donating to those in need the cost of those things we’ve given up for Lent. For example, maybe each week you allot some portion of your grocery budget to sweets or desserts. During Lent you might give up those sweets and, in turn, donate the money you saved by not purchasing sweets. Here is how St. Claude de la Colombiere explains it in his book The Sufferings of Our Lord Jesus Christ. [Almsgiving] This is one of the obligations of Lent; one of the intentions with which the Church requires us to fast. Penitence must not economize to gratify avarice; what we retrench from the expenses of our table, our dress, and our amusements ought to ... Read more here
Lentern Journey

Fr Robert McTeigue – Lent is a dress rehearsal

Let's make sure we've gotten past the Sunday school concept of how to live this season. “Daddy, I used to think that I would be in my 20s forever, but then I turned 27 …” That’s part of a conversation I overheard recently. I too, was once a 20-something, and unconsciously assumed that being in one’s 20s was “standard”; then the first gray hair showed up… I think of these things as the season of Lent begins. There are so many ways of marking Lent badly—ways that are harmful. And there are some very good ways of living Lent well—ways that are often overlooked or have become obscured or forgotten over the years. Growing up, I remember hearing other children at Sunday School talking about what they would “give up” for Lent. Word had trickled down to us that as Catholics, we were supposed to deprive ourselves of something that we ... Read more here

When young people scrutinise themselves and others, they often see their own faults and the faults of others with great clarity. They sometimes fail to use this information, however, to offer a fair and complete evaluation of the whole person. Commentary on Isaiah 43:16-21; Philippians 3:8-14; John 8:1-11

GOD HAS A VERY BAD MEMORY. That is one way we might express the theme of today’s readings. For the Scripture of today’s Mass speaks of how God is always compassionate to his people. No matter how many times the Israelites abandoned their God, no matter how many times they became “stiff-necked” and refused to do his will, he always came to call them back. In the whole of the New Testament we see God, in the person of Jesus, calling his sinful people to be converted, to put their whole trust in the message he brings and to follow his Way, as the way of truth and life. Jesus can be called the Sacrament of God among us. A sacrament in general is a visible manifestation of the power of God working among us. So when we see the man Jesus, we are seeing God (though imperfectly, because what ...

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 03-04-2022

Something New: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Fifth Sunday of Lent The Liturgy this Lent has shown us the God of the Exodus. He is a mighty and gracious God, Who out of faithfulness to His covenant has done “great things” for His people, as today’s Psalm puts it. But the “things of long ago,” Isaiah tells us in today’s First Reading, are nothing compared to the “something new” that He will do in the future. Today’s First Reading and Psalm look back to the marvelous deeds of the Exodus. Both see in the Exodus a pattern and prophecy of the future, when God will restore the fortunes of His people fallen in sin. The readings today look forward to a still greater Exodus, when God will gather in the exiled tribes of Israel that had been scattered to the four winds, the ends of the earth. The new Exodus ...

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week -03-04-2022

Background on the Gospel Reading - John 8:1-11 Jesus does not condemn the woman caught in adultery. The Gospel for the fifth Sunday of Lent continues to offer lessons about God's mercy and forgiveness. Last Sunday we heard the Parable of the Prodigal Son from the Gospel of Luke. Today we hear not a parable, but the report from John's Gospel of an encounter among Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees, and a woman caught in adultery. In John's Gospel, the conflict between Jesus and the scribes and Pharisees occurs much earlier than in the Synoptic Gospels. Jesus' cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem is reported at the beginning of John's Gospel. Even after this event, Jesus continues to teach in the Temple. After returning to Galilee for a time, Jesus again enters Jerusalem and cures a man on the Sabbath. From this point forward in John's Gospel, the Pharisees are ...

5 Triduum Traditions To Help Your Family Celebrate Holy Week

Holy Week – The Most Important Week for Christians

Holy Week should be the most important week of the year for all Christians. It should be the week in which we give of ourselves to the fullest in order to fully receive Christ during the Easter celebration. That’s the ideal. However, we all know that sometimes life just gets in the way. Work or school, various activities, and even our family responsibilities can keep us from making the most of the week that should be set apart from all others. Other times it’s not our busyness that prevents us from living out Holy Week, it’s our laziness. Maybe we’ve ...

    Stations of the Cross

was led by Father Simon however Parishioners are invited to come forward for the other five Fridays to lead the Stations of the Cross for the parishioners. You can do it as a group, it doesn’t have to be on your own.

There are also some reference books available, but you may have one you’d like to share. Stations of The Cross is a beautiful devotion and there is such a variety.

If you would like to participate, please contact Father Simon and we can share your ideas and how to do it. Stations of the Cross is not of itself a priest led devotion anymore than saying the Rosary is pries led.

There is a list in the Sacristy if you would like to put your name forward.

    CLEANING St Swithun’s Catholic Church:

Please contact the Parish Office if you are able to support our wonderful team of cleaners. I am grateful for their support so thank you all.

    Mass Stipends

There are a number of dates where there is not mass intention, so if you would like to have a mass said please ensure that you book one.
There is a general diocesan donation level set at £7.00 although this must be understood that this is as a donation not as price.
The tradition of paying a stipend was to keep the priest in victuals for the day.

Missio Red Boxes Gift Aid Envelopes for the year starting April 2022

Please collect you Gift Aid envelopes from the back of the church. Many thanks to all those who donate in this way and by standing order. Would you like to contribute in this way? If you are a tax payer we could claim 25% of your donation. Forms are at the back of the church, or please contact the parish office.

    Holy Spirit and the Bible

The month of April is dedicated to the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit and the Holy Eucharist are both at the heart of what being Catholic is all about. We believe in the Holy Spirit and the transformation of bread into the Body of Christ. There are many symbols used to represent the Holy Spirit, but the two most notable are fire and the dove. Fire is cleansing. Where there is fire, something imperfect is destroyed and something new arises. It indicates an intense and powerful energy capable of transforming the soul. The dove on the other hand, is used repeatedly to signal the touch of the invisible omnipresent God ...

Name and Titles of the Holy Spirit

The Proper Name of the Holy Spirit  "Holy Spirit" is the proper name of the one whom we adore and glorify with the Father and the Son. The Church has received this name from the Lord and professes it in the Baptism of her new children. The term "Spirit" translates the Hebrew word ruah, which in its primary sense, means breath, air, wind. Jesus indeed uses the sensory image of the wind to suggest to Nicodemus the transcendent newness of him who is personally God's breath, the divine Spirit. On the other hand, "Spirit" and "Holy" are divine attributes common ...

Dove as Symbol of Holy Spirit

    Symbols of the Holy Spirit

Water. The symbolism of water signifies the Holy Spirit's action in Baptism. Anointing. The symbolism of anointing with oil also signifies the Holy Spirit, to the point of becoming a synonym for the Holy Spirit. Fire. While water signifies birth and the fruitfulness of life given in the Holy Spirit, fire symbolises the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit's actions. Cloud and light. These two images occur together in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. The seal is a symbol close to that of anointing. "The Father has set his seal" on Christ and also seals us in him. The ...

The Holy Spirit and Our Spiritual Life

Everything depends on the Holy Spirit's operation in us. The more fully we allow ourselves to be drawn and guided by the Holy Spirit, the closer we shall come to Jesus and His mysteries and graces. The Holy Spirit must draw us to every good thought, word and deed. Every act of faith, of hope and of love for God requires the inspiration and help of the Holy Spirit. If our virtues and our deeds are to be truly perfect and worthy of God, they need the special and continual touch of the Holy Spirit. Even though we are endowed ...

Veni, Creator Spiritus (Come Holy Spirit, Creator Blest)

One of the most widely used hymns in the Church, Veni, Creator Spiritus, is attributed to Rabanus Maurus; (776-856). It is used at Vespers, Pentecost, Dedication of a Church, Confirmation, and Holy Orders and whenever the Holy Spirit is solemnly invoked. A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who recite it. A plenary indulgence is granted if it is recited on January 1st or on the feast of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast made. O comforter, ...

    Signs and Symbols

The signs and symbols used in the Church’s liturgy provide us with a great opportunity for reflection. These simple elements of everyday life invite us to reflect on the mystery of our faith. Most of them are also found in our own homes: oil, bread, light, water, wine, and white clothing. They are simple, basic and very accessible to us. These simple elements of everyday life invite us to reflect on the mystery of our faith. We need symbols that speak to us of the sacred. Updated Coronavirus Safety Guidelines

Track and trace: code. Please use the QR Code (on the back of the church). Simply hold your camera app over the code and follow the instructions. This would be helpful should a local outbreak of the virus be detected.
Ventilation:In order for us to comply with regulations and therefore be considered a ‘COVID secure environment’ the doors must be left open. As the temperature drops in the weeks ahead it will be important to wrap-up warm for Mass! Please do bear this in mind.

Please remember the advice is to wear a mask inside closed areas and churches.
