A prayer for Ukraine, Russia and peace

O God,
it is your will to hold both heaven and earth
in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love
shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
and give peace to Ukraine,
peace among nations,
and peace in our hearts,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

My Dearest Parishioners, Visitors, Friends – Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Jesus’ instructions on how to be ready for the coming judgment continue in the stories and sayings found in today’s Gospel. We are not to be like the greedy rich man in last Sunday’s Gospel who planned to store his great harvest in barns rather than share it. We are, rather, to share our wealth with those in need. The antidote for the anxiety brought on by the coming judgment is to relinquish our possessions and provide for the needs of others. Our treasure will be in heaven where it will not wear out or be destroyed.

The other major way to be ready for the coming judgment is to be watchful. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about watchfulness to begin making this point. We must be like servants waiting for the master’s return from a wedding banquet, which, even now, can last for a few days in the Middle East. We must be watchful so that even if the master comes after midnight, we will be ready for him. This is what the coming of the Son of Man will be like.

Peter asks if this parable is meant for the apostles or for the large crowd that has gathered to listen to Jesus. Without answering Peter’s question, Jesus responds with another parable about servants awaiting the return of their master. It begins with a question: “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?” This parable adds to the theme of watchfulness; it explains how to wait and reminds us of the reward for the faithful follower at the heavenly banquet after the judgment. If it is addressed to the apostles, then it could also be addressed to leadership in the early Church. Either way, the parables reminds us that we should be found doing our jobs when the master arrives. If we are doing our jobs, our reward will be great. But if we relax, neglect our duties, and begin to act like the greedy rich man—eating, drinking, and making merry—we will not have a place in the kingdom. Watchfulness means living in such a consistently moral and obedient way that we are always ready to give an account to God of how we have lived.

with Blessings Father Simon

HOLIDAYS:

Loving Father, during this time of rest and relaxation, please repair in me whatever is weary or broken, and revive my drooping spirit.
Let this holiday be a graced time of recollection and rejuvenation, of deeper self-awareness and eager self-giving.
May it be an occasion of refreshment and reinvigoration, a time to reclaim my friendship with Jesus Christ,
who is Lord now and for ever. Amen.

REFLECTION:

Opening Prayer: Thank you for the gift of this new day. Thank you for the gift of faith, which allows me to seek to live this day meaningfully. You know that I come into your presence filled with a desire to praise you and to receive the grace I need to glorify you by my life. Enlighten me, Lord, and strengthen me.

Encountering Christ:

Unexpected Arrival: Jesus makes clear that although we know that he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, we do not know when he will come. And so, we must always be ready: You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. Jesus invites us to a daily lifestyle marked by a keen awareness of life’s brevity and eternal trajectory. Either the second coming or our own death is always close by. This theme appears throughout the Bible, especially in the wisdom literature: As for man, his days are like the grass; he blossoms like a flower in the field. A wind sweeps over it and it is gone; its place knows it no more (Psalms 103:15-16). Is that how we live? Do we see ourselves, our work, our decisions, and our relationships from this perspective? A common exercise for a spiritual retreat is to sit down and write one’s own eulogy, what we would want to be said about how we lived when our earthly journey is complete. Taking time to reflect on our lives from this perspective can help us gain clarity and focus, enabling us to live each day more truly and more fully.

Eternal Repercussions: Jesus explains that our experience at the end of history–either our own personal history or the history of the world as a whole–will be directly affected by how we choose to live in history. If we live responsibly, loving God and neighbor by seeking and embracing God’s will day by day until the end, we will be blessed. But if we block out the eternal perspective and live only for self-indulgence and self-glorification, we will suffer for it. And the suffering will be in proportion to the level of awareness we had of our true responsibilities. Some commentators see in this passage an allusion to purgatory, since Jesus points out that those who are grossly irresponsible in this life–the ones who act irresponsibly even though they are fully aware of what God was asking of them–will be beaten severely, while those who acted similarly with less awareness will be beaten only lightly. There are degrees of suffering as well as degrees of glory on the other side. Jesus wants us to know this. Theologians can’t explain completely how exactly this works, but we can’t ignore Christ’s clear revelation that our choices here on earth will have eternal consequences. How much does this awareness affect my daily life? How much would Christ like it to affect my daily life? How would my daily life look different if I lived with a greater awareness of this truth?

Great Expectations: When Jesus summarizes his parable by saying, Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more, how do I react? An unhealthy reaction would be to think that I need to earn God’s love by putting on a good performance. Jesus doesn’t say that God’s love for us depends on our behavior. In fact, his love for us is complete and overflowing regardless of our “performance.” The mere fact of our existence is proof of this—if God didn’t love us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3), he wouldn’t have created us in the first place. Another unhealthy reaction would be to turn away from God because he is too demanding, too authoritarian. Jesus is not being unreasonably demanding with us simply by encouraging us to live responsibly. In fact, being faithful and prudent stewards of the great gift of life, and all that goes with it, is merely the path to joy and fulfillment. Squandering our gifts may promise some immediate pleasures, but we are not made for those; we are made for lasting relationships and meaningful activity. And so, a healthy reaction to Jesus’s apparently stark answer to St. Peter’s question would be joyful relief. Jesus has designed the universe in such a way that the deepest longings of our hearts can actually be fulfilled, through living in friendship with him. This is a far cry from the emptiness and angst brought to us by the postmodern view of human life as a meaningless and hopeless blip on the universe’s epiphenomenal radar screen.

Conversing with Christ: Thank you, Lord, for giving me work to do for you in your Kingdom. Thank you for entrusting me with so much—with my life and talents, with the sacraments and faith itself, with the people around me and connected to me. I want to be a faithful and prudent steward of all your gifts. I want to live on the wavelength of glad gratitude, joyfully fulfilling my duties with the knowledge that in doing so I get to exercise my love for you and comfort your Sacred Heart.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will have a conversation with my spiritual director, or a trusted mentor of some sort, about how I use my time, and how I could use it more responsibly, for God’s glory and the advance of his Kingdom in my heart and in the hearts of those around me.

It’s God who calls us to the unknown, beyond our little world. We don’t know exactly what will happen, but we know that the trip will change us for the better. In Sunday’s Gospel: Luke 12:32-48 Jesus says  "Where is your treasure?" Children , have you ever been to a party where they played a Treasure Hunt game? It is great fun! The game is played by giving each player a list of clues which, if followed correctly, will lead them to find a "treasure." Many times the treasure is just a cheap toy or a piece of candy, so when you play the game, it is important ...

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 07-08-2022

Faith of Our Fathers: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time We are born of the faith of our fathers, descending from a great cloud of witnesses whose faith is attested to on every page of Scripture (see Hebrews 12:1). We have been made His people, chosen for His own inheritance, as we sing in this Sunday’s Psalm. The Liturgy this week sings the praises of our fathers, recalling the defining moments in our “family history.” In the Epistle, we remember the calling of Abraham; in the First Reading we relive the night of the Exodus and the summons of the holy children of Israel. Our fathers, we are told, trusted in the Word of God, put their faith in His oaths. They were convinced that what He promised, He would do. None of them lived to see His promises made good. For it was not until Christ ...

Commentary on Wisdom 18:6-9; Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19; Luke 12:32-48

Where your treasure is, there will be your heart be also. We continue today with the theme of last Sunday’s Mass (18th Sunday in Year C). There we heard a parable Jesus told about a man who made a great deal of money and was very happy with himself. “My barns are full. Now I can sit back and enjoy the rest of my life.” But his Lord said, “You fool! Tonight you will die and leave all your money and property behind. Someone else will enjoy all the fruits of your hard work.” And, when that man died and went before his God, what had he to offer? All that stuff in his barns? No, all that had to be left behind for others. When my turn comes to face my God and he asks me what I have and I respond: “Well, during my lifetime I managed to ...

    Parish Devotions this month

    Immaculate Heart of Mary

    Month of the Immaculate Heart

The month of August (Overview - Calendar) is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart. Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person and is the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue. This devotion has received new emphasis in this century from the visions ...

    Consecration to the Immaculate Heart

Pope Paul VI,, on the floor of the Vatican Council at the close of the third session, renewed publicly the consecration of the Church and the world to Mary's Immaculate Heart. He said that his thoughts turned to the whole world "which our venerated predecessor Pius XII . . . not without inspiration from on high, solemnly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. . . . O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Council, to you we recommend the entire Church." When he visited Fatima on May 13, 1967, the same Pope recalled this"consecration which we ourselves have renewed on ...

    Reparation to the Immaculate Heart

Our very consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary calls upon us to make reparation for the offenses that we and others have committed against her. The Church, in inviting us to consecrate ourselves to her Immaculate Heart, implicitly calls upon us for this reparation. But more explicitly, and even before Fatima, Saint Pius X offered a plenary indulgence to all who on the first Saturday of the month would observe special devotions in honour of the Immaculate Virgin in a spirit of reparation for the blasphemies uttered against her. There is, however, an even more basic reason why each ...

August- The Blessed Sacrament & Immaculate Heart of Mary

August is the month of the Blessed Sacrament and dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The month of August is dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. The entire month falls within the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time. The last portion of the liturgical year represents the time of our pilgrimage ...

August Month of the Blessed Sacrament

We know, as Catholics, that we encounter Jesus whenever we go to Mass and experience the Consecration. When wine and bread are transformed into Body and Blood, and we receive Him, we are transformed. It grants a special grace to handle the trials of Christian living. Consecrated hosts are kept in a sacred container called a ciborum that is housed inside the tabernacle. The tabernacle is what we are to face when we genuflect at Mass. Some parishes have designated times where the prayerful contemplation called Eucharistic Adoration take place. This is a wonderful exercise for our spiritual muscle. Take ...

    A Time to Persevere

The days of summer have provided a welcome change of pace. However, while vacations afford us the time to relax and refresh, the change of habits and routines can also have a negative impact on our spiritual lives. As if to re-ignite us, the Church offers us in the plethora of August feasts vivid examples of the virtue of perseverance: six martyrs — two who are named in Canon I of the Mass and two who were martyred during World War II; seven founders of religious congregations, as well as three popes and two kings; the apostle, St. Bartholomew; the ...

It began bleeding when consecrated and part of it became human tissue. After several intense studies, it was found that the tissue was part of a heart, a muscle of the myocardium, the left ventricle, the muscle that gives life to the whole heart and body. The tissue revealed further that it belonged to a person who had gone through intense pain, experiencing extended periods of time ...

A prayer for Ukraine, Russia and peace

    O God,
it is your will to hold both heaven and earth
    in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love
shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
    and give peace to Ukraine,
    peace among nations,
    and peace in our hearts,
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen.

My Dearest Parishioners, Visitors, Friends – Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ

It is good to remember that Jesus’ contemporaries lived lives of immense hardship, under very harsh social and political conditions. Famine or land appropriation were a constant threat for subsistence farmers, suffering under excruciating taxation practices. In this situation, the landowner who stored his surplus crop, instead of helping to feed and support poorer farmers, would not have won the sympathy of Jesus’ listeners. They will have enjoyed this simple reminder that even unscrupulous people like this landowner will die, and his grand plans will look very foolish.

The parable is told as a warning against greed, but Luke is offering a deeper theological meaning. What are the ways in which I am ‘rich toward God’? The rich man has a ‘me, me, me’ complex. He does not come across as wicked or evil but as selfish, greedy, preoccupied with himself to the exclusion of others. Lord, do I get caught in the unholy trinity of ‘Me, Myself and I?’

One could argue that the rich man is not foolish because he makes provision for the future. But his own future is his only concern, not that of others. He does not think to use his abundance to help others. Lord, make me a grateful person, aware that all that is good in my life comes from you, and is held I trust, for others.

Saint Ignatius was a mystic who had very enriching ideas about God and about ourselves. He saw God as the great lover and ourselves as God’s beloveds. He saw too that God gives us everything and even wants to give his very self to us, so far as he can. Lord, make us grounded enough to want only to love and humbly serve others as best we can.

    with Blessings Father Simon

Amen.

    REFLECTION:

Opening Prayer: Holy Spirit, take away from me now everything that distracts me from praying. I am here, and I am yours.

Encountering Christ: The Desire to Possess Things: When a person faces a good of any kind–an object, a value, another person–he or she not only experiences the desire to enjoy it, but to possess it. It seems that this is related to the human capacity for reaching out beyond the present moment into the future. I call that projection. We understand ourselves not simply in the light of what is, but, at least as much, in the light of what will be. That is why people build barns: to guarantee that they will be able to rejoice in their goods in the future. The Gospel prompts us to reflect about our tendency to look ahead. Quite compellingly, Jesus points out that our future is really not as much in our control as we like to believe it is. I don’t think he wants us to be indifferent about the future. On the contrary, the capacity to project is crucial when it comes to living our lives and becoming who we are called to be. But, on the other hand, we have to check our urge to indiscriminately grab and store up the goods put before us. What barns have I built for the future and what kinds of things am I storing there?

The Temptation to Greed: God often presents us with goods that he wants us to share, invest, or even give up. Putting everything into a dark barn may feel safe for the moment, but it’s only appropriate if that’s what God has intended for us to do with it. We have to be discerning regarding our drive for possession. What feels “right” can be deceiving, and can turn into greed, compromising the goods that we were hoping to protect. We’re called to recognize that everything we have comes from God, and that we are merely stewards of these gifts. “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).

Life Does Not Consist of Possessions: We can all sometimes fall prey to the desire to measure our self-worth by our possessions. In the culture, we often idolize those with great wealth. Wealthy people seem to have it all. But Christ warns us in the Gospel to reject this assumption. Life does not consist of possessions. What matters is how well we love. As Mother Teresa told us, “There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love” (A Simple Path). Our ultimate success will be measured by the love we share with others. “If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3).

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, my life is filled with goods. Above all, I want to thank you for this “bountiful harvest.” I realize that many of these gifts are fundamental for my life, and I also acknowledge that none of them are guaranteed to last. In fact, what of it will last for eternity, Lord? My heart relishes the goods that make me happy. My nature urges me to continue to provide for that happiness. And yet I know nothing can guarantee it but you. I beg you, yes, I beg you, Lord: Fill me with the theological virtue of hope, so that I really rely completely on you when it comes to the future. I hope in you and that means you alone are what I want to hold on to. I want to fill the barns of my heart with your goods alone.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will look over my possessions and ask: “Among everything that I have received, what is the most precious in the light of eternity?”

Thoughts on Today's Gospel and Readings for the Week -31-07-2022

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week -31-07-2022

Background on the Gospel Reading - Luke 12:13-21 A person's life does not consist of possessions. In Chapter 12 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus instructs his disciples and the crowd on how to be ready for the coming judgment. A crowd of many thousands has gathered to hear Jesus. At first he speaks only to the disciples, reminding them that it is not persecution they should fear but the judgment that is coming for all who do not acknowledge the Son of Man. Suddenly a man in the crowd shouts out to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” He seems to have grown tired of Jesus speaking only to the disciples. Jesus offers the man no help. Instead he uses the question to teach what, in light of the coming judgment, life really consist of. Jesus tells the crowd a parable. A rich man's lands ...

This very night your soul will be demanded of you." Children at this age are concerned with issues of fairness and are drawn to participate in making things right. This Sunday's Gospel  help them consider the unfairness of hoarding wealth. It is good to remember that Jesus' contemporaries lived lives of immense hardship, under very harsh social and political conditions. Famine or land appropriation were a constant threat for subsistence farmers, suffering under excruciating taxation practices. In this situation, the landowner who stored his surplus crop, instead of helping to feed and support poorer farmers, would not have won the sympathy of Jesus' listeners. They will have ...

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 31-07-2022

The Fool’s Vanity: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Trust in God—as the Rock of our salvation, as the Lord who made us His chosen people, as our shepherd and guide. This should be the mark of our following of Jesus. Like the Israelites we recall in this week’s Psalm Response, we have made an exodus, passing through the waters of Baptism, freeing us from our bondage to sin. We too are on a pilgrimage to a promised homeland, the Lord in our midst, feeding us heavenly bread, giving us living waters to drink (see 1 Corinthians 10:1-4). We must take care to guard against the folly that befell the Israelites, that led them to quarrel and test God’s goodness at Meribah and Massah. We can harden our hearts in ways more subtle but no less ruinous. We can put our trust in possessions, squabble over earthly ...

Commentary on Ecclesiastes 1:2,2:21-23; Colossians 3:1-5.9-11; Luke 12:13-21

Our attitude to material things is the subject of today’s readings. It is about the things that we really regard important in our lives. They also suggest that what we ARE is of far greater importance than what we HAVE. The Gospel begins by introducing a man who wants Jesus to act as a mediator in a property dispute. “Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.” It was quite common to bring such disputes to a rabbi to be solved. But Jesus has no interest whatever in dealing with this problem because it represents a point of view that is totally at variance with his own. Instead, Jesus gives a warning: “Be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a person’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.” It is possible that the ...

The Letter reaffirms the importance of ecclesial communion around the Rite of Mass that emerged from the Second Vatican Council. It is not a new instruction ...

After signing with First Company Management, Cochren’s music was sent to Gotee Records’ CEO Toby McKeehan. “The soulfulness this man exudes brings pleasure to my ears as well as my heart,” shares Toby. “His passion for the church is so refreshing and real. APPEAL A fourth season of failed rains is causing one of the worst droughts East Africa  has seen in decades. In Turkana, in northern  Kenya, crops won’t grow in the parched ground and animals are beginning to die. An estimated  50% of children in Turkana are malnourished. Mary’s Meals serves nutritious school meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest countries. The promise of a good meal attracts these hungry children into the classroom, giving them the energy to learn and hope for a better future. We are already feeding more than two million children every school day – and, together, we can reach the next hungry ...

To reiterate this point, I would ask you to consider one of the following posts: • Altar Servers • Cantors to sing and help lift the liturgy • Catechists for RCIA, Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation • Cleaners • Extraordinary Ministers of Communion • Finance Committee members • Flower arrangers • SVP personnel These are just some of the roles that need to be filled. Prayer of the Month – July 2022

Pope Francis Prayer Intentions July 2022

Universal intention – For the elderly

We pray for the elderly, who represent the roots and memory of a people; may their experience and wisdom help young people to look towards the future with hope and responsibility.

Prayer of the Month – July 2022

Dear Lord, Father of young and old alike, teach us to honor those of our brothers and sisters who began their walks of faith before us and who continue on their journeys home to You. Guide us to see every person, regardless of age, as your precious and beloved child.

Give us the grace to reach out to those quietly in need among us and to be Your hands and feet for them. Through prayer and acts of service, help us to see Your face in the elderly in our families, neighborhoods, and churches. Help us to slow our pace of living and to appreciate the gift of these lives. We know that You make all things new, and so we ask that You call us to new friendships whose fruit will last.

You have given each of Your children gifts with which to serve You. May we recognize these gifts in ourselves and in others, so that together, we can build Your kingdom.

St. Anna, St. Simeon, Sts. Anne and Joachim, pray for us.

Month of the Precious Blood of Jesus

The Precious Blood of Jesus "The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the Saviour shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it." The Old fulfilled in the New Covenant

Sacrifice is the highest form of religious worship which man offers to God as an act of praise, thanksgiving, petition or atonement. The most singular and pre-eminent sacrifice of the Old Law was the immolation of the Paschal Lamb which celebrated the sparing of Israel's firstborn from the fatal sword of the Angel of Death in Egypt at the time of Moses and Pharaoh. The imagery of sacrificial blood from slain animals is made more vivid and meaningful if we recall Moses' words from the Book of Exodus, "And he took the blood and sprinkled it upon the people, and he said: ... The Devotion to the Precious Blood

This devotion is one of the most ancient of pious Church practices. It is said that the Blessed Virgin venerated the Most Precious Blood of her infant Son on the day of His circumcision as she collected the first relics of His Precious Blood on a piece of cloth. On that momentous occasion she united her tears with that of the Word Incarnate on account of not so much of the sensible pain but of His supernatural sorrow for the hardheartedness of mortals. Devotion to the Precious Blood is not a spiritual option, it is a spiritual obligation, and that not ... The Symbol of the Precious Blood

Adam is sleeping an ecstatic sleep. God opens his side, removes a rib and forms Eve, the mother of all the living. But our view transcends this action and in spirit we behold the second, the divine Adam, Christ. He is sleeping the sleep of death. From His opened side blood and water flow, symbols of baptism and the Eucharist, symbols of the second Eve, the Church, the Mother of all the living. Through blood and water Christ willed to redeem God's many children and to lead them to an eternal home. At Jerusalem a service in Yahweh's honour is taking ... Read more here

The Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ

The New Testament Catholic doctrine teaches the faithful that the blood of Jesus Christ is part of His Sacred Humanity and hypostatically united to the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. And as such, it is worthy of adoration and veneration proper to latreutical worship (cultus latriae) which is rendered only to God. In other words, we adore the human nature of Christ because of its intimate and eternal union with the Person of the Divine Word. • It is for this same reason that we honour the Most Sacred Heart or the Wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ. A prayer for Ukraine, Russia and peace

    O God,
it is your will to hold both heaven and earth
    in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love
shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
    and give peace to Ukraine,
    peace among nations,
    and peace in our hearts,
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen.

My Dearest Parishioners, Visitors, Friends – Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ

Hospitality is exceedingly important in the biblical world in general and in Luke’s Gospel in particular. When Jesus comes to Bethany, Martha demonstrates hospitality by welcoming Jesus into the home she shares with her sister Mary. She then busies herself with the tasks of serving their guest (diakonian). Although we are not told precisely what those tasks are, a good guess is that she began preparing a meal. Meanwhile her sister Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, listening to his words. Rather than assuming the role expected of women in her culture, she takes her place at the feet of Jesus. She assumes the posture of a student learning at the feet of a rabbi, a role traditionally reserved for men.

Distraction and Worry: This pleasant story takes a sharp turn when Martha, distracted by her many tasks, comes to Jesus and asks, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me”(10:40).

Many who read or hear this story may cheer for Mary in her inversion of traditional roles. Many may also empathize with Martha’s resentment of her sister for leaving her to do all the work. Jesus’ response to Martha seems less than empathetic, chiding her for her distraction and worry, and praising Mary: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing.* Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her” (10:41-42). The problem with Martha is not that she is busy serving and providing hospitality. Certainly Jesus commends this kind of service to the neighbor many times, notably in the parable of the Good Samaritan that immediately precedes the story of Mary and Martha. The problem with Martha is not her serving, but rather that she is worried and distracted. The word translated “distracted” in verse 40, periespato, has the connotation of being pulled or dragged in different directions.

Martha’s distraction and worry leave no room for the most important aspect of hospitality — gracious attention to the guest. In fact, she breaks all the rules of hospitality by trying to embarrass her sister in front of her guest, and by asking her guest to intervene in a family dispute. She even goes so far as to accuse Jesus of not caring about her (Lord, do you not care…?). Martha’s worry and distraction prevent her from being truly present with Jesus, and cause her to drive a wedge between her sister and herself, and between Jesus and herself. She has missed out on the “one thing needed” for true hospitality. There is no greater hospitality than listening to your guest. How much more so when the guest is Jesus! So Jesus says that Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.

Jesus’ words to Martha may be seen as an invitation rather than a rebuke. Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. The one thing needed is for Martha to receive the gracious presence of Jesus, to listen to his words, to know that she is valued not for what she does or how well she does it, but for who she is as a child of God.

The One Thing Needed: In a culture of hectic schedules and the relentless pursuit of productivity, we are tempted to measure our worth by how busy we are, by how much we accomplish, or by how well we meet the expectations of others. Preaching on this text may provide a rich opportunity to address this cultural malaise. Many people in our congregations likely identify with Martha. Feeling pulled in different directions, feeling worried and distracted by many things — these seem to be common threads of life in our fast-paced world. And yet, as Jesus says in Luke 12:25, “Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?” We know that worrying does no good, and that much of what we worry about is not so important in the larger scheme of things, and yet we cannot seem to quell our anxious thoughts and frantic activity. It is true that much of our busyness and distraction stems from the noblest of intentions. We want to provide for our families, we want to give our children every opportunity to enrich their lives, we want to serve our neighbors, and yes, we want to serve the Lord. Indeed, where would the church be without its “Marthas,” those faithful folk who perform the tasks of hospitality and service so vital to making the church a welcoming and well-functioning community?

And yet if all our activities leave us with no time to be still in the Lord’s presence and hear God’s word, we are likely to end up anxious and troubled. We are likely to end up with a kind of service that is devoid of love and joy and is resentful of others. Both listening and doing, receiving God’s Word and serving others, are vital to the Christian life, just as inhaling and exhaling are to breathing. Yet how often do we forget to breathe in deeply? Trying to serve without being nourished by God’s word is like expecting good fruit to grow from a tree that has been uprooted.

Luke’s story is left suspended. We do not know what happened next — whether Mary and Martha were reconciled, whether they were all able to enjoy the meal that Martha had prepared, whether Martha was finally able to sit and give her full attention to Jesus. We do know that Jesus invites all of us who are worried and distracted by many things to sit and rest in his presence, to hear his words of grace and truth, to know that we are loved and valued as children of God, to be renewed in faith and strengthened for service. There is need of only one thing: attention to our guest. As it turns out, our guest is also our host, with abundant gifts to give. (by Elisabeth Johnson)

    REFLECTION:

Introductory Prayer: Lord, I believe that you are my God and my all. You created me, and you made me to be happy with you. Lord, I hope in you, because I trust that you will not lead me astray. I love you, Lord, because you are the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through you, Lord, and I love you for being the mediator before the Father.

Petition: Lord, be the center, standard, and example of my life.

    1. “You Are Anxious About Many Things” – It seems that things are moving faster all the time and that more and more things vie for my time. I serve as a chauffeur for the household, I spend a large part of my time accompanying the children for extracurricular activities, and people left, and right want to talk to me. There is so much going on. Our culture almost demands that I do all these things. What is more, it seems at times like no one understands my dilemma. I am trying to do what is right, I am trying to be responsible, and it looks like no one else is. I identify myself with Martha, Lord, in a world which is so active and at times seems to fly by. Help me to make the right choices and to fulfill your will.

    2. “There Is Need of Only One Thing” – Love Christ. Live for him. As life progresses and eternity draws near, only the love of Christ remains. Everything else turns into smoke, mist, nothing. Christ’s love is the treasure for which I should sell everything else, even egotism, pride, and vanity. Lord, you are all I need. What else will matter when I finish my life? Who else can fill my soul with satisfaction and peace? Who else brings meaning to my life but you? Remind me of this, because many times it is so easy for me to lose my focus and direction in the world. It seems so easy for me to put other things first.

    3. “Choose the Better Part” – Lord, your words to Martha strike a chord in my heart. I can let the noise and distractions around me nick at my heart and misdirect me, but all that will do is bring about more confusion and uneasiness. However, if I choose you, what great confidence it will bring me to know that you will not be taken from me. Everyone wants to be happy. Everyone wants to be fulfilled. Why should I fool myself looking for happiness in the things of this world when you supply it, Lord? Why should I settle for something less than the better part which you want to give me? Shouldn’t I be excited to be able to sit at your feet and spend time with you when you want to teach me what it means to be the best I can be; to be holy?

Conversation with Christ: Lord, give me the confidence of knowing that you are all I need. I do not want to distract myself with anything else. I want to sit at your feet. I want to listen to what you want to tell me. I want very much to learn from you.

Resolution: After Mass, I will visit Christ in thanksgiving for having received him in the Eucharist, and I will take a moment to listen to what he has to tell me.

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week -17-07-2022

Father Mike Schmitz discusses the story of Martha and Mary. He addresses the common misconception that only one of these women of the Bible was doing God's will. Father Mike Schmitz discusses the story of Martha and Mary. He addresses the common misconception that only one of these women of the Bible was doing God's will. Neither Martha nor Mary were doing anything wrong when Jesus came to visit the home of Martha in Luke 10:38-42. Martha was doing a very good thing as she made preparations during Jesus’ visit, but her sister Mary chose the better part because she chose the thing that we’re going to do for eternity in heaven, just spend time with Jesus. Father Mike uses the life of Blessed Mother Teresa as an example of someone who both served Jesus in the poor and adored him in the Blessed Sacrament everyday, essentially doing the part ...

Children – Read today’s Holy Readings here again 17-07-2022

Today’s Gospel is the story of Martha and Mary. Jesus visits and Martha is working hard, yet Jesus tells her that Mary has done the right thing, just by sitting down and listening. Martha feels anxious about many things, while Mary is focused on Christ. It’s easy to get worried and forget what is most important. Our lives aren’t about work. When we worry about all the little things in our lives, we are distracted from the one thing that really matters, God. When God is at the center of our lives, he shines light on everything else, and all the things we have to do. He gives us a sense of purpose. We understand what our lives mean. Martha and Mary! Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 17-07-2022

Waiting on the Lord: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time God wants to dwell with each of us personally, intimately—as the mysterious guests once visited Abraham’s tent, as Jesus once entered the home of Mary and Martha. By his hospitality in this week’s First Reading, Abraham shows us how we are to welcome the Lord into our lives. His selfless service of his divine guests (see Hebrews 13:1) stands in contrast to the portrait of Martha drawn in this week’s Gospel. Where Abraham is concerned only for the well-being of his guests, Martha speaks only of herself—”Do you not care that my sister has left me by myself . . . ? Tell her to help me.” Jesus’ gentle rebuke reminds us that we risk missing the divine in the mundane, that we can fall into the trap of believing that God somehow needs to be served ...

Commentary on Genesis 18:1-10; Colossians 1:24-28; Luke 10:38-42

One theme of today’s readings is hospitality. Hospitality is a very important element of life in the Middle East. This is not surprising, given the hostile terrain of large stretches of waterless desert and hot sun. Such hospitality for us has become a victim of modern urban living. We only open our doors to our own family or people we know well. Our houses are constantly locked, even when we are at home. There are peepholes, cameras, alarms. Strangers are no longer be trusted. One wonders if this is a step forward in our so-called civilised, cultured, developed and sophisticated society? Hospitality in Scripture The two main readings today deal with aspects of hospitality. In the First Reading from the Book of Genesis, we see Abraham. He is still a nomad, living in a tent, constantly on the move following the needs of his flocks of sheep and cattle. We ...

    Amen.

In today’s Gospel we have the parable of the Good Samaritan to a Jew and a scholar of the law. It was in response to the question, “Who is my neighbour?” after Jesus told him to love his neighbour as himself. This is a classic parable because it clearly depicts the need to care for those who are in need. It should be noted that in the end, Jesus referred to the Samaritan who helped the robbers victim as the neighbour. Thus, the one who help is being neighbour to the neighbour in need.

The first reading is a beautiful compliment to this parable. Through Moses, God told Israel what they had been missing. They only need to carry out the commandments and everything will be in order for them. In the end, God said, “It (the command) is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you only have to carry it out.” The commands are easy to understand, very accessible, and doable. Unfortunately, the Israelites, and we can say even the people of succeeding generations up to our present time are just to hard-headed . Thus, the constant and repetitive sins through disobedience.

    The readings are telling us that the key towards being neighbour is by following the commandments. The commandments include care and responsibility towards neighbours. It also includes how to be a neighbour to others. We can deduce the following points;

    1. The true Christian neighbour is always ready to help.
    2. The true Christian neighbour does not discriminate.
    3. The true Christian neighbour does not waste time.
    4. The true Christian neighbour helps fully the needy.
    5. The true Christian neighbour believes and follows God’s commandments.

The source of being neighbour is love of God.

    with Blessings Father Simon

    REFLECTION:

In reflection on this week’s Gospel, Pope Francis said “the Good Samaritan indicates a lifestyle, the centre of which is not ourselves, but others, with their difficulties, who we meet on our path”. Let’s strive to treat others, not only how we would like to be treated, but as Christ. For when we help those in need we are helping Christ Himself.

Introductory Prayer: Almighty and ever-living God, I seek new strength from the courage of Christ, our shepherd. I believe in you, I hope in you, and I seek to love you with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind and all my strength. I want to be led one day to join the saints in heaven, where your Son Jesus Christ lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

Petition: Jesus, may I love as you have loved me.

    1. Teacher, What Must I Do to Inherit Eternal Life? Since the human soul is spiritual, its longings are infinite in scope, and so we naturally want to live an eternity of happiness, an eternity full of life. Yet this scholar of the law has keenly perceived that eternal life is more than just the next step after death. I must do something to inherit it. My existence and my redemption are unmerited gifts from God: I never asked him for the gift of life, nor did I ask him to die for me, yet here I am, alive and redeemed. What is more, I can never earn either existence or God’s free love. Yet there is at least an aspect of eternal life that derives from my merit. The quality of my eternal life corresponds to the quality of my love and the goodness of my deeds on this side of eternity.

    2. What Is Written in the Law? The response of Jesus verifies a profoundly Catholic understanding of reality. The scholar’s question could be put in another way: “What must I do to be saved?” One would expect the response to be: “Believe, have faith!” Yet Jesus already knows that this man has faith. He confirms that faith is undoubtedly necessary for salvation, but that faith must be translated into love if we are to have eternal life. When Jesus says, “What is written in the law,” he presupposes faith in God, the author of the moral law. But also, he is inviting him to apply his faith to living the law in love. Faith and works are inseparable. “Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; but whoever keeps his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection” (1 John 2:4-5).

    3. Do This and You Will Live: With these words, Jesus brings the lesson to a full conclusion. By loving as the Good Samaritan loves, we are on the path to a life that is never-ending, a life that we naturally long to experience and possess. We must always trust Jesus when we find that he places us in situations that stretch our love and generosity to limits that often hurt. He knows that we long for eternal life, but he also knows that the path to that life is a love that purifies, stretches, and demands our all. Therefore, Jesus invites us to follow him down the road of life-giving love. Every crucifix reminds us of this self-giving love that leads to life.

Conversation with Christ: Blessed Lord, increase my faith so that I may see you in every person I meet. Strengthen my hope that I may trust firmly that you will give me all I need to love as you ask. Deepen my love that I may experience the joy that comes from giving and not counting the cost. Mother Most Pure, make my heart only for Jesus.

Resolution: Today, I will do three hidden acts of charity.

Commentary on Deuteronomy 30:10-14; Colossians 1:15-20; Luke 10:25-37

The core of the Christian message is: – faith as total trust in God and his message that comes through Christ in the New Testament; – love as the driving power of all our actions and relationships. We cannot have one without the other. As the Apostle James says in his Letter: “Faith without good works is dead.” Some people tend to be very concerned about orthodoxy, about thinking and saying the right thing in conformity with the Church’s teaching, but there can be no orthodoxy without orthopraxis, as the example of the Pharisees makes clear. Faith which does not express itself in love is Pharisaism. Christian faith truly lived results in a bonding with people everywhere. It is a living out of the prayer, “OUR Father”. Four people Today we have one of the most famous Gospel stories, the “Good Samaritan”. There are four people in the story: – ...

Dr. Scott Hahn – Gospel Reflections 10-07-2022

What We Must Do: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time We are to love God and our neighbor with all the strength of our being, as the scholar of the Law answers Jesus in this week’s Gospel. This command is nothing remote or mysterious—it’s already written in our hearts, in the book of Sacred Scripture. “You have only to carry it out,” Moses says in this week’s First Reading. Jesus tells His interrogator the same thing: “Do this and you will live.” The scholar, however, wants to know where he can draw the line. That’s the motive behind his question, “Who is my neighbor?” In his compassion, the Samaritan in Jesus’ parable reveals the boundless mercy of God, Who came down to us when we were fallen in sin, close to dead, unable to pick ourselves up. Jesus is “the image of the invisible God,” this ...

Thoughts on Today's Gospel and Readings for the Week -10-07-2022

Thoughts on Today’s Gospel and Readings for the Week -10-07-2022

Background on the Gospel Reading - Luke 10:25-37 The parable of the Good Samaritan. As Jesus continues his journey to Jerusalem, he is confronted by a scholar of the law who wants to test him. In the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, Jesus is asked about the greatest commandment. Here, in Luke's Gospel, the lawyer asks what we must do to inherit eternal life. In the other two Gospels, Jesus answers the question by quoting Deuteronomy 6:5, on loving God with all your heart, and Leviticus 19:18, on loving your neighbor. Here Jesus asks the expert to answer this question, “What is written in the law?” The man is caught and responds with Deuteronomy 6:5. This verse is one of the most important prayers in Judaism, and it was said twice a day in Jesus' time. Love of God and love of neighbor are what is required for eternal ...

Dear Families Fortnightly Theme: Let the peace of Christ control your heart

As we near the end of another school year we look back on a busy year but one where the world was finally getting back to normal after all he disruption of the past few years. It may even be easier to let Christ’s peace in our hearts as we recognise the effects the pandemic has had on all of us. The children have got back to learning and growing with their friends and we have seen a huge difference in their resilience as the year has progressed. At this time of year everyone gets tired and the heat can make us a bit grumpy but the children have been continuing to work hard and treat each other with love and respect.

    Ukraine:

We have forwarded the ‘Messages of Hope’ that the children wrote for the people of Ukraine; here is a link to the Hampshire Ukrainian Community Facebook page where the children’s work has been shared also – https://www.facebook.com/hampshirukrainiancommunity.

    Our New School Mission Statement:

Yesterday the whole school got involved in sharing ideas to rethink our Mission Statement. After an assembly where many wonderful ideas were shared and a group of staff and children worked to create few options for the rest of the school to discuss and finally choose their favourite. Here it is:

“As God’s stewards we do our best to learn about, and protect, all His creation.”

    Mr Declan Dixie-Goodwin Headteacher

A prayer for Ukraine, Russia and peace

    O God,
it is your will to hold both heaven and earth
    in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love
shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
    and give peace to Ukraine,
    peace among nations,
    and peace in our hearts,
    through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    Amen.

This week’s Class Prayer by Zebras

    Dear God
Thank you for caring for the world. Thank you for your kindness.
Thank you for the animals, plants and making us all unique.
Thank you for our families and our helpful friends. Thank you for the people who love us and what they do for us.
    Amen

The Good Samaritan—a traveler himself, one on the move—shows us what it means to encounter the stranger, to accompany one in need and become a companion on the journey. In reflection on this week's Gospel, Pope Francis said "the Good Samaritan indicates a lifestyle, the centre of which is not ourselves, but others, with their difficulties, who we meet on our path". Let's strive to treat others, not only how we would like to be treated, but as Christ. For when we help those in need we are helping Christ ...

Our Parish Saint St Swithun’s Day Mass – 15th July 2022

Fr Simon Writes: ..... ST SWITHUN PATRONAL FEAST – 15 JULY 2022 I will be saying Mass in the morning at St Swithun’s School.  The evening Mass has a suggested time of 7.00pm.  I don’t know what has happened previously, so I am open to suggestions. We could have a little buffet and some wine at the back of church rather than worry about the hall which may be in use. What do you think? Saint Swithun’s Story (c. 800 to 2 July 862) The life of St Swithun, an Anglo-Saxon bishop, is rich in legend. A century after his death ...

Pope Francis – 2nd World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Pope Francis established a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly which took place for the first time on Sunday 25 July 2021. In 2022, the celebration will fall on Sunday 24 July, the Sunday closest to the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, Grandparents of Jesus. The theme chosen by Pope Francis for this year’s celebration is: “In old age they will still bear fruit” (Psalm 92:15). The Catholic Grandparents Association has been at the forefront in campaigning for a greater recognition of Grandparents for their role and vocation in passing on their faith to the next generation. He wanted a skit to speak to the youth in rivaling gangs and those pressured to join about loving your enemies and how we are all equal in God’s eyes. It is based off the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10. This video is of the same skit performed by our 2014 summer staff and full time staff members. Published on 22 Oct 2014 ...

    Music Lessons

If you would like your child to learn a new musical instrument next year, please remember to let the office know which instrument they are interested in playing. If you have already done this you do not need to do it again.

    House Team Names

From September the children will be allocated to school “houses”. Thanks go to the School Council, the Minnie Vinnies, Mrs Verhiest and Mr Dunn for leading them in their efforts in getting us to this point, we have chosen our House Team names! A special mention goes to Blessings (in Panthers class) for her great research, thank you Blessings!

We think that the chosen saints reflect the great diversity of cultures in our school.
    • St Therese (of Lisieux) RED colour– patron saint of missions and florists – feast day on 1st October
    • St Francis (of Assisi) GREEN colour – patron saint of animals and the environment – feast day 4th October
    • St Paul (the great missionary) YELLOW colour– patron saint of missionaries, evangelists, writers and public workers – feast day 29th June
    • St Josephine (of Sudan) BLUE colour – patron saint of human trafficking – feast day 8th February.

The children will learn about these saints in the coming year and hear about their inspirational stories, as well as earning points for their house from positive learning behaviours, relationships and following the school’ Mission Statement.

Further details about the house system will be shared with families at the beginning of the new school year.

    End of Year Report

The children have been given their school reports to bring home today.

We would like to remind families to ensure that all bicycles and scooters are stored in the correct allocated area and that the school is not responsible for either their security or any damage that may occur. All bicycles and scooters are left on the school site at your own risk. No bicycles or scooters are to be stored behind the wheelie bins. Thank you.
End of Year events coming up

    Lost Property

All lost property will be put out near the entrance gates on the last day of term for parents to retrieve anything that may have disappeared during this term. Anything that remains unclaimed will be donated to FOSSS for resale.

    Supporting our families

As we come to the end of a short but busy half- term we can begin to look back and say ‘it’s beginning to feel normal again’. I’m sure all of us are still feeling the effects of the pandemic, especially lockdown, so we need patience not only with others but with ourselves and recognise that it takes time for us to work through worries and anxieties and feel happy again. A number of children do feel this way in school and we are supporting them. Families do need support too, this isn’t something to be afraid of and a little help can make a big difference to the wellbeing of everyone in a family group.

There are opportunities available for families and sometimes just a quick chat with one of the school’s pastoral team can lead to support being offered. The offer is open to all our families to discuss such needs without judgement or question.

    Wimbledon Park Behaviour

Whilst we are not responsible for the children when they leave school and go to the park, or go if they go there before school in the mornings, there is a growing concern about the behaviour of the children once there. A few staff have mentioned the sometimes destructive behaviour and further issues have been reported by parents about falling out and very silly behaviour. The park is a wonderful resource and we can see the excitement children have when leaving school to get there quickly.

We ask parents, carers and other family members to ensure the children behave sensibly and do not provide opportunities for complaints about poor behaviour from our children.
