Ascent Group – Events 2021 Timetable

Dear Friends May you be blessed with a happy and hopeful New Year. Although we are still in the midst of illness and restrictions, there are signs of hope as vaccines begin to be rolled out. We thank God for the answers to prayers made right at the beginning of the pandemic, that vaccines would be developed quickly; and we continue to pray for those suffering and for an end to the global crisis.

ADoRE monthly sessions will continue online for the foreseable future, and we are encouraged by many positive reactions already to our 2021 programme plans – see below for information about the year and the January zoom meeting.

2020 has of course been an extraordinary year of challenges, but we praise and thank the Holy Spirit for inspiring and enabling us to respond by initiating new developments throughout the year, as summarised below.

We believe that in 2021, as we continue to worship the Lord ever more deeply, thanking Him for everything He is doing, we will see His glory shining ever more brightly and many more people experiencing Him at work in their lives.

Alastair and the Core Group

The Table below show all our activity for 2021 in general outline.

Please note that while we are under Covid restrictions all meetings will be via ZOOM online. Visit our website for registration and log on details each month.

Register NOW for our mini-retreat morning on Zoom and, through our worship at Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, prophetic reflection, praise and inspiring talk, we will find out how the Lord is equipping us to share his Good News with the world through the “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” – His empowerment, which is a current of grace for the whole Church.

Message from the Ascent Group due to Covid

Dear Ascent Group

As you are aware we have not met as a group in St Swithuns church hall  since February this year due to the restrictions imposed by  the Corona virus situation. The full year,2020, had been booked for meetings and outings and it is considered that we may be able to pick up on this programme in the next year, 2021. This of course would be dependent on any imposed restrictions due to the continuation of the virus then! An encouraging email from Paula Conrad (Our Southwark Region Vice President) is in part reproduced below.

‘Dear All – What a very long time it has been since we were all in touch.

I wonder how you have been coping with the lockdown.  I am endeavouring to put together a small Journal as it is important to keep everyone informed and united.
If you have anything of interest that you feel would make an interesting article for the winter Journal, I would be so happy to receive it.  During these months, people have been developing forgotten skills or neighbourliness or helping others in special ways.  Please do let me know of anything you feel others would like to hear about. (Contact Paula on Tel. 020 8653 5206)
Whether you have met or otherwise I Send you all my very best wishes and praying all will be well very soon. God be close to us all – Paula'”

Ascent Group – A visit to the Southsea Group

A visit to the Southsea Group

The majority of our groups are far flung from each other. The Southsea/ Hampshire group definitely falls into this category. For many years they would link up with the Winchester group until Margaret Guppy finally closed the group and then Southsea were out on a limb.

Robert and Eileen Steward, the group leaders, invited me to visit St Swithun’s on 24 June to explain how Life Ascending began and perhaps give the members some ‘hot news’ and encouragement. That day the weather forecast suggested huge thunderstorms and torrential rain but thank God, all we got was some soft rain.

St Swithun’s (1908) is a beautiful Gothic style church and the old school building is now part of the parish. On arrival, I received a warmwelcome and was shown into the huge hall where 20 seats had been set out for our meeting. These soon filled up with enthusiastic members, smiling and ready to listen and participate. Robert suggested we sing ‘Holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty’ followed by the Life Ascending prayer then the floor was mine. To trace back over 40 years and explain the growth of the movement, our involvement in the different International meetings, our celebrations and ways of promoting the movement under five different presidents, plus the increase and decrease of groups was certainly quite a task.

The Holy Spirit always works overtime at these moments and I could not believe the way my talk came together with few notes. The words of St. Luke [12 v11-13] “Do not worry about what you are to say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment, what you should say” are so true.

Elizabeth organised the tea, which had been laid out on crisp white cloths. All sorts of treats awaited us; not only fresh cream scones, topped with strawberries but two homemade cakes decorated with ‘Life Ascending’. The table was long enough for all 20 of us to sit down and relax before the group’s regular meeting took place. Molly read a prayer about lighting a candle, followed by Eileen reading about St Therese of Lisieux and Robert telling everyone about a proposed visit to the New Forest which included a cream tea. In no time he had a queue of members waiting to book their place on the mini-bus.

Nevin composed a lovely prayer to complete the afternoon, with everyone helping to clear up and then bidding farewell to their friends.
I was so pleased to meet everyone and sense the happiness the members enjoy at St Swithuns. The vibrancy of this group was inspirational and I returned home
with every hope for the future of our movement.

Life Ascending – A Catholic movement of the Church

Life Ascending is a Catholic movement for men and women in their middle and  later years. Life Ascending has three aims: Spirituality Friendship and Mission

Life Ascending welcomes all Christians and their friends of other faiths, who have that extra time to reflect, hope, to grow in faith and smile

Christ’s message in the Gospels is at the heart of the meeting and reveals new insights into all that Christ is saying to us at this stage of our lives. Sharing the Good News and our joys, concerns, experiences and activities can bring great happiness and peace of heart.

Here, within the parish group,  friendships develop as members pray and share various concerns and resolve them,  like untying a knot and then letting things go.   The time spent together is valuable and bears fruit as we find ways to help others, in the family, the Church and our local community.  Laughter and fun is key when we meet. It prevents the Life Ascendinmeeting becoming too, too serious and lifts the spirit.

Our Winter 2019 Journal is published

Our Winter Journal 2019 is now ready to be viewed as a pdf. Look at the publications page under Information. It is hoped that there is enough interest in the Journal for both members and non-members. So much depends on contributions of articles, prayers, anecdotes and more.

Robert Steward and his wife Eileen are the joint leaders of the Ascent Group (Life Ascending) and it will be our 10th year as such in 2020.

CHRISTIAN MORNING MEDITATION:Sharing My GiftJanuary 28, 2021Memorial of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the ChurchMark 4:21-25Jesus said to his disciples, “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”Opening Prayer: Lord, help me to really reach you in my prayer, to hear you, so I can discover the satisfaction and happiness that comes from serving you and serving others.Encountering Christ:1. It Was the Least I Could Do: How do I make my light shine? What do I measure out? How do I understand what Jesus is talking about? This is really about the essence of being a good Catholic. Many Catholics think they do enough by going to Mass on Sunday and avoiding mortal sin. Actually this is the minimum requirement. There is more—a lot more. If at the Pearly Gates St. Peter asked us, “Why should I let you into heaven?” would he be satisfied with the answer, “Well, I always did the bare minimum.”2. Why Did God Put Us Here?: The Church has never hidden what God wants us to accomplish in this life. We are called to become saints. Being “nice” or “good” is a stepping stone, but not enough to fulfill our calling. As saints, we are not expected to be weird or strange. Sanctity means becoming all that God hoped for when he made you. It means reaching our total fulfillment as human beings—and that’s different for each person. A saint is someone who tries his or her best to do God’s will (not necessarily perfectly!) every day—and does it because he or she loves God. This is how we come out from under the bushel basket and let our light shine.3. I Am a Gift for Others: What is God’s will for me? We serve him best when we serve others. This often means sacrifice, but it’s worthwhile because sacrificial love is the only thing that brings us happiness. Think back to the moments when you achieved real happiness—deep down satisfaction that doesn’t fade away with time. Wasn’t it when you sacrificed for the good of another or for God? Wasn’t it a moment when you let your light shine instead of hiding it? Wasn’t it when you measured out whatever you had to offer rather than hoarding it? By putting others’ satisfaction and comfort and pleasure ahead of our own, we are fulfilling God’s command in this Scripture. God made us to be a gift for others, and the more generously we measure out that gift the happier we will be. We may even be surprised how much our little light shines when we finally let it be seen!Conversing with Christ: Jesus, maybe I never realized the real reason you put me here, but now I know. Help me to be generous with my time and talents, using them for others and for you so that I will leave the world a better place than I found it, at least for the people surrounding me. Increase my love, so I use my time and talents for the right motives, not so I will become famous or rich or any other selfish reason.Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will look for opportunities to serve others because that is the main way I serve you, who I find in the least of my brothers.stswithuns.org.uk/event/dr-28012021 ... Jesus said to his disciples, “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Opening Prayer: Lord, help me to really reach you in my prayer, to hear you, so I can discover the satisfaction and happiness that comes from serving you and serving others.

Encountering Christ:

1. Peter asked us, “Why should I let you into heaven?” would he be satisfied with the answer, “Well, I always did the bare minimum.”

2. This is how we come out from under the bushel basket and let our light shine.

3. We may even be surprised how much our little light shines when we finally let it be seen!

Conversing with Christ: Jesus, maybe I never realized the real reason you put me here, but now I know. Help me to be generous with my time and talents, using them for others and for you so that I will leave the world a better place than I found it, at least for the people surrounding me. Increase my love, so I use my time and talents for the right motives, not so I will become famous or rich or any other selfish reason.

Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will look for opportunities to serve others because that is the main way I serve you, who I find in the least of my brothers.

The fruit will be harvested later when your good works are seen then glory will be given to God who planted that seed.🙏❤

CHRISTIAN MORNING MEDITATION:Receiving the Seed in Good SoilJanuary 27, 2021Wednesday of the Third Week in Ordinary TimeMark 4:1-20On another occasion, Jesus began to teach by the sea. A very large crowd gathered around him so that he got into a boat on the sea and sat down. And the whole crowd was beside the sea on land. And he taught them at length in parables, and in the course of his instruction he said to them, “Hear this! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky ground where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep. And when the sun rose, it was scorched and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it and it produced no grain. And some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit. It came up and grew and yielded thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.” He added, “Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear.” And when he was alone, those present along with the Twelve questioned him about the parables. He answered them, “The mystery of the Kingdom of God has been granted to you. But to those outside everything comes in parables, so that they may look and see but not perceive, and hear and listen but not understand, in order that they may not be converted and be forgiven.” Jesus said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the parables? The sower sows the word. These are the ones on the path where the word is sown. As soon as they hear, Satan comes at once and takes away the word sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground who, when they hear the word, receive it at once with joy. But they have no roots; they last only for a time. Then when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Those sown among thorns are another sort. They are the people who hear the word, but worldly anxiety, the lure of riches, and the craving for other things intrude and choke the word, and it bears no fruit. But those sown on rich soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”Opening Prayer: Lord, help me to pray with an open heart so that the seed you sow in me doesn’t die, but bears abundant fruit. Encountering Christ:1. I Wasn’t Talking to You: It sounded like Jesus didn’t want people to understand his preaching. Instead of speaking clearly, he spoke in parables that he later had to explain to his disciples. Once he explained it, they understood, but why didn’t he speak that way to the crowds who came to listen? Did he only want to help a few select people instead of everyone? That can’t be the correct interpretation of this passage.2. The Crowd Is the Field Jesus Is Sowing In: To explain himself, Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah was speaking to people who had hardened their hearts against the prophetic word he was sent to speak to them. Because their hearts were hardened, they would not have accepted and understood the Lord’s word even if he had presented it clearly. Yet, there were a few who listened with open hearts, and God’s word found good soil in their hearts that day. Jesus wasn’t saying he didn’t want anyone to understand. He was saying that even if he spoke clearly, many wouldn’t understand—because they didn’t want to. Yet the word he speaks to open hearts bears fruit, just as the parable says. The seed he is sowing is reaching everyone, but not every heart provides the good soil needed to bear fruit.3. Waiting: A lot of the spiritual life, like farming, is about waiting. Even when a seed falls into good soil, it doesn’t bear fruit immediately. It lays dormant in the soil for a while, then begins to grow when conditions are right. The Apostles and those in the crowd who had open hearts began “growing” in understanding and finally bore abundant fruit when the right conditions were available. The descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost provided the right conditions. Like the Apostles, we too need the Holy Spirit to fully understand what Jesus taught.Conversing with Christ: Lord, I know that it’s only possible to speak of God in images—to tell us what your Father is like, not how he actually is, because he is beyond our understanding. Help me to understand your parables so I can get a glimmer of you and your Father—of your goodness, your kindness, and your love for me, so I may be converted and be forgiven.Resolution: Lord, today by your grace I will be open to your word to me and to the Holy Spirit’s help in understanding it and using it to bear fruit—thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.stswithuns.org.uk/event/dr-27012021 ... CHRISTIAN MORNING MEDITATION:

Receiving the Seed in Good Soil
January 27, 2021
Wednesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time

Mark 4:1-20

On another occasion, Jesus began to teach by the sea. A very large crowd gathered around him so that he got into a boat on the sea and sat down. And the whole crowd was beside the sea on land. And he taught them at length in parables, and in the course of his instruction he said to them, “Hear this! A sower went out to sow.
