This week at St Swithun’s Primary School has been ‘Aspirations Week’. It has been great! We have been very lucky in attracting a wide range of speakers to inspire the children. The week started well, with Fr Marcin talking about the life of a parish priest. We have enjoyed visits from an Olympian, Fr Marcin, a doctor, a nurse, a scientist, a journalist, a marketing expert, two policemen, two IT technicians, the Deputy Lord Mayor,a photographer, a chef, a group of lifeguards rounded off on Friday afternoon by our local MP, Stephen Morgan.
The aim is to inspire the children and broaden their horizons when thinking about their futures. Really helpful in that have been our two IT technicians and our world-renowned scientist – all are women, challenging the gender assumptions that many children (and adults) still have. The Deputy Lord Mayor helped challenge assumptions too as he is an entrepreneurial young man!
Aspirations Week has been great. The children have really enjoyed listening to and asking questions of the huge range of people who have visited this week.
The Deputy Lord Mayor helped that too as he is an entrepreneurial young man!
All the speakers commented on the children’s engagement and interest and the thoughtful questions they asked.
And the best quote of all from a Year 1 child, ‘I want to be a teacher because you get to drink lots of tea!’
We want our children to believe that they can be whatever they want. We hope that the week has inspired and motivated them to work hard and aim high! My thanks to everyone who has given up their time to come and talk with the children. They have loved it!!
The week finished with an Aspirations dress up day. Here are just a few of the children showing off their costumes and some of the wonderful statements they have made about their inspirational visitors.
“I enjoyed learning about the spray the police use on baddies. It makes snot come out of their nose and then their eyes close so the police can catch them”, (Felix, Bumblebees).
“I enjoyed Sgt Bacon’s visit because he played music for the Royal family and I liked the instruments he played. Also he got to show us what he wore” (Holly, Gorillas).
“My favourite part of the week was when DS Eamer came in and we solved a crime where Iron Man fought Captain America” (Selma, Gorillas).
“This week has change my whole future plan; there are so many jobs”.
Some of the quotes from the children always make you smile:
‘I enjoyed the orthopaedic nurse’s visit because she showed us X rays and Sergio put on a cast.’ Jenson
‘I liked Sgt Bacon because he played music for the Royal family and I liked the instruments he played also he got to show us what he wore.’ Holly
‘I really liked DS Eamer’s visit because we got to solve a case with all the cool fingerprints and mouth swabs.’ Jonah
Eden – “Dr Hockley told us that a stethoscope lets you listen to people’s hearts. I would like to be a doctor now!”
