The next Ascent Group meeting will take place in the Church Hall on Monday the 29th of April from 2:15pm. The guest speaker will be Dr John Steadman who will talk on William Wyllie the Marine Artist and his works whilst resident in Portsmouth. All welcome! Note that the funding of £17 per head will be collected at this meeting for those members who have booked for the Selbourne trip on Tuesday May the 28th.
William Lionel Wyllie painted seascapes and produced etchings portraying maritime subjects from fishing boats to destroyers. He also created etchings and watercolours of life on the Thames.
Wyllie was born on 6th July 1851 in London. During his professional career Wyllie won the Turner Gold Medal at the age of eighteen and later earned full membership of the Royal Academy, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, amongst other accolades. In 1906 he moved to Tower House, Portsmouth, where he was instrumental in campaigning and fundraising to move HMS Victory into dry dock and organising her restoration. W L Wyllie died on 6 April 1931 and was buried with full naval honours at Portchester Castle.
