Children, In Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus tells us about another comparison to the kingdom of heaven.
Watch this fun short video of Today’s Gospel Matthew 25:1- 13
He tells a story of ten people waiting at a wedding for the bridegroom to arrive. The bridegroom represents Jesus returning to earth. It is dark and so the 10 people waiting all have lamps with them to light the way. But, five of them were sensible and took extra oil, so if the bridegroom was later than expected they would still be able to light his way. They were prepared.
The bridegroom was very late; it was after midnight before the ten people were asked to go out and meet him and five of them no longer had enough oil for their lamps. They had run out of oil; the spirit of Jesus, the light of Christ was no longer burning in their hearts. They were not prepared for Jesus’ return.
Sometimes things happen that we don’t expect. And we realise that we are not ready for them. We know that Jesus will return to earth one day but we don’t know exactly when. In today’s reading Jesus is telling us we should be prepared, so we are ready and waiting when he comes again.
How do you think we can make sure we are prepared for the return of Our Lord?
Closing prayer: God of all, you call us to be ready for the coming of your kingdom. Help us to listen to your word and answer your call, so that we may be found ready when your kingdom comes. Amen.
